There may be a build up of dust in the machine. Turn it over and remove the screws that hold the beater bar cover and see if there is any white like powder caked on the inlet area.

Recently Ive started smelling gas or exhaust fumes when my 96 Tahoe is sitting and crunk up! What could this be?

If you are smelling raw fuel i would check the fuel pressure regulator.Pull the map sensor vacuum hose off and look for fuel in the hose and also look in the air intake pipe for fuel if you see any in either of these two components then replace the fuel pressure regulator.

I bought a used Austin Air HealthMate and it has an awful smell coming from it... it's similar to the fragrance that was in the house we purchased it from. We've had it running for over a week near an open...

I have the same problem although I figured it was due to the filter being close to five years old. I have had the Healthmate since 1996 and the current filter is 4 1/2 years old. The unit is in my son's room and I had noticed for a while (maybe the last 6 months or so) that his room had a foul sour smell to it. My wife & I thought it was our son as he is close to puberty and starting to need deodorant but I took the unit out of his room and the smell is gone. I'd be willing to bet that both you and I need a new filter.

I just purchased a used XL15s. The unit when in manual mode emits an oder, but the air feels oxygenated. When you breath close to the machine the air seems to irritate or kinda burn my eyes. When in auto...

This is what the machine is designed to do! The machine emits a low amount of ozone, which is the purifier/sanitizer created by sunlight. Close to the machine, it's concentrated. When it spreads throughout the room, it kills odors and bacteria, and creates the fresh smell of clean air. The air truly is "oxygenated," because ozone is simply O3, instead of O2, and breaks down quickly.
If the numbered dial is set too high (try it at 300 to 500) it will smell "bleachy." Your "rule of thumb" is that when you've been away, and enter the home, you should experience the same fresh, clean smell that you get when you step outdoors on a bright spring or winter day.
When you're doing something that creates odors, like frying fish or cooking sauerkraut, turn the dial up to take care of that odor quickly, then turn it down for normal operation.
Leave it on the manual setting for continual purification. Often, the auto setting has been disabled, which might be the case in your older machine. (These machines can be 12-15 years old!) For an owners manual, go to www.vollara.com (new name of Ecoquest/Alpine). They may be able to help you.

Leather recliner near the unit has become "tacky".

Unfortunately this site has cut off your description of what has happened to your leather recliner, but here's my best guess...  If the handles of the weight equipment are made of rubber, then almost certainly what you are experiencing is oxidative deterioration caused by the ozone that your "purifier" emits.
It may give a fresh smell to the air, but ozone is an environmental pollutant, causes degradation of organic matter such as leather and rubber (which is how it eliminates nasty smells) and is toxic to animals (including people), often causing respiratory problems.
Writing as a qualified chemist and biologist, I would not want to be in the same room as an ozone generator, and preferably not even in the same house. My advice to you: turn the "purifier" off - permanently!  It will be better for both you and your possessions.

When ionizer is on even

Hi willy,

The ionizer itself shouldn't smell. I wonder if you're smelling O3 (aka ozone or activated oxygen), or if there's a short-circuit of some kind that is causing electrical components to overheat/burn. Burning electronics and singed hair smell more alike than ozone (which isn't the same as ionization, incidentally.

Write back with more details if you can, preferably with any details about your observations.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Jon

Air Purifier smells like chlorine

Mine does too. Did a little research - I guess all air filters let out a little bit of ozone. Some describe the smell of ozone to be something like bleach yet others say it smells like geraniums or even "sparks" (like the sparks that come off of the bumper car ride at the fair...hmm...interesting). Not sure which to believe, but I know mine smells.
I found a manual talking about reducing this smell. Said the first couple of weeks are the worst of it, but if it still bothers you, you could install an "activiated carbon filter" down stream from the air filter, or go through complicated instructions (for whatever model they were talking about) to go into the of the machine and switch stuff around.
Both solutionssound complicated to me.
I'm just happy knowing the smell is normal and that it is actually working. Think I'll live with the smell.

XL15

The ozone plates need to be cleaned monthly to work effectively. You can get an owner's manual for free from the manufacturer's website, it's at:

http://www.ecoquestintl.com/support/US50300_Living_Air_Owners_Manual.pdf

The manual has a description of the type and frequency of cleaning of various parts of your air purifier. Hope this helps!
