New Dayton well pump now pressure tank will not hold

We just installed a new Daton shallow well pump. The pressure tank will reach it's shutoff point and the pump will kick off. Then within in seconds the pressure tank will drop pressure and pump will kick on again. Pressure tank was replaced 4 months ago and new pump yesterday.

Maybe there is problem with the foot valve of your well pump, call a professional to inspect it. Also check your well pressure tank for is it 100% okay. I hope your problem will be solved.

My sand point well the water stops and starts again

You probably need to purge the pressure tank.
Well Pressure Tank Installation Instructions

Pressure tanks lose their Pre Charge pressure and have to be serviced. The well Pump needs to OFF. The Pressure tank needs to be emptied of water. There should be an air valve on the tank. Check the pressure .If this is a Bladder tank and Water comes out of the air valve- then the bladder is broken and the tank needs to be replaced. The Pre Charge pressure is set to 2 psi Below the cut-in pressure set by the pressure switch. If your system operates at 20-40 psi, The Pre Charge pressure will be 18 psi. Hope this helps.....

Just installed new pump. It runs, brings water up, but builds no pressure. Runs to the point where it gets too hot and shuts off.

Do you have a shutoff valve so that you know there is no water flow after the pump? There could be a leak downstream.
If so, what pressure are you getting?
Is it possible that the pump is not going full speed?

A new pump with no water flow should get to shutoff pressure.

Write back.

My water system is loosing pressure. The pump runs until it gets to the preset of 50 psi but when it stops, the pressure drops right away. if I shut off the pump, it drops to 0 psi. I checked the pressure...

There is a screened check valve that should be attached to the pick up / suction side of the pump on the very end of the plumbing in the bottom of the well. If you have shut off the water output going to the home / what ever and the pump still drops pressure to zero as soon as it shuts off the shallow well foot valve is stuck open / has failed.

Some systems use both a foot valve and an in-line check valve to prevent the symptom you currently have.

Foot valve example:

If this valve has failed... there is nothing to prevent the contents of the pressure tank from dumping back into the shallow well.
I doubt you have a shut off on the pump suction side but if you do once the pump shuts off close this valve. I would bet your pressure tank holds the pressure. If you do not have a shut off valve... just feel for a rush of water in the suction pipe AFTER the pump reaches pressure and shuts off. If your feeling water flow with the pump off and the tank at pressure / loosing pressure the foot valve is bad.

Hi,
Those pumps will reach 50# when brand new, but soon the parts wear and then they will not make that pressure anymore...
Instead of replaceing the pump, just back the pressure down a tick or two to get it to shut off and not waste your electric....

Installed a new jet pump for shallow well (gravity feed to pump) - used old pressure tank - after about 4 months pump began kicking on and off constantly when in use - troubleshooting guide suggested it...

The pressure tank must have a certain amount of air in it so pump doesn't cycle as you say. The new pressure tanks have a bladder that separates air from water and keeps the pump from cycling so much. Make sure your pressure switch on the pump is OK--ie doesn't have burned contacts!

Flotec 42 gallon water tank - short cycling and changing water stream...do I need a new tank or could it be another problem?

These holding tanks are pre charged with air which in turn pressurizes the water. The tank has a bladder and an air valve on top. The pre charge ,over time, loses pressure, and the tank has to be pressurized again.
  • The well pump needs to be turned off.
  • The water has to be drained from the tank
  • Air is put into the tank from the air valve on top of the tank, and is measured with a tire air gauge.
  • The pre charge pressure is set to two psi below the pump cut in pressure.
  • In other words if your pump kicks on at 30 psi, the pre charge pressure is set at 28 psi. If the pump kicks in at 20 psi, the pre charge is set at 18psi, etc.
  • After you pressurize the tank, turn water back on.
  • If water comes out of air valve on top of tank, then the bladder is ruptured and you need a new tank.
  • Hope this helps!
