Mountfield Emperor 21 blade spins freely when engaged to cut. The blade stops when disengaged but wont cut when engaged as there appears to be no resistance when cutting and blades spins too slowly.

Engine is fine, cable is tight and engaging / disengaging ok. I would expect the blade to spin faster with more resistance when engaged and not sure what is wrong.

The spindle shaft could be broken. If this is a multi blade machine, it would only be one blade since it is unlikely you broke them all. Belt tension or routing of the belt would be the first thing to check, especially if you had the belt or deck off prior to this. I accidentally routed a belt wrong. That will wear them out fast.

I forgot to mention to check a broken spindle, with engine off, engage blade (I am assuming a mechanical belt tensioner, and not electrical clutch) try to rotate the blade. If it rotates easily, the spindle is broke or the spindle drive pulley is not engaged on the spindle. Could have broken a key or worn spines.

Check condition and tension on belt. When engaged it should not depress more than an inch. Check wear on pulleys. Clean under deck - blades, bearings, pulleys, etc.

Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

Do the blades need sharpening? Check the belts for tightness and the spring that holds the tension. what stops? The blades stop, but the belt is still turning? Check to also make sure the blades turn freely with the belt disengaged. you may have a spindle problem too.

Stalls When engaging the blade clutch

Check that the blade brake is disengaging. Slip belt off blade spindles and check that they spin freely. Check underside of deck for clogged grass, ropes, wire, etc.

Hi, Have you tried to turn the blades by hand ( WITH THE MOTOR OFF ) I suspect there may be some transit packing that you may have missed. The blades should turn freely with the motor off and the blade engaged. There is a blade brake which stops the blades turning when the drive is disengaged which might need adjusting .
Hope this helps.

I have a mountfield 1538h-sd blades disengaged while mowing belts seem very slack ,but the belts are all on the pulleys.

The belts may be loose. With the mower off, engage the blades and check the tension.Next would be to get under the mower and check for debris in and around the lever that engages the blades.Sometimes trash will get hung up in there and the blades will disengage. The next step would be to inspect the pulleys for debris and to make sure the spindles are not bent. While at the pulleys make sure there are no burrs or cacks in the pulleys,as that will cause the blades to disengage.
