Please use the provided USB cable and connect it to an available USB port on the laptop.

If you intend to boot up using the Portable USB DVD Drive - please select the appropriate option under the BIOS settings.

BIOS settings depend on the laptop you're using. You could check on the manufacturer's website to check how you can select an external boot device. Most of the BIOS will have an option for "External / USB CD-Drive". You'd need to select that as the first boot device by moving it up the list of devices. These options will be typically under the Boot menu in BIOS. If you can help me with the Make and Model of your laptop - I will try looking up the details.

I have a HP External USB CD/DVD R/RW drive. Stopped working.

First, try a new USB cable. Two, try a different USB port (if using a hub, directly connect to the computer). Three, check if there are any updated drivers or firmware for the drive.

(also make sure that the external drive is self-powered that the cord is undamaged and the power isn't surging or going into a brown-out. If it is one of the new bus-powered DVD drives, make sure that the computer has a good power source (not on battery for a laptop).)

I have lost my power cord to my LaCie DVD+RW Dual Layer....

Here is the PDF Users Manual for the LaCie DVD+RW 301230U
external optical drive,

http://www.lacie.com/download/manual/portable_dvd_sh_en.pdf

(Give it at least 10 seconds to download)
Should the direct link above not work for you, you can download the Users Manual from here,

http://www.generalmanual.com/Disc-Burners/LaCie-301230U-Portable-DVD-RW.htm

Go down to the bottom of the page, and under the green -> Download Now <- heading, click on -> User Manual
The reason I posted the link to the User Manual, is that you can use a USB to USB cable for power. You plug one end of the USB cable, into an available USB port on your computer, and the other end, into the LaCie DVD+RW external optical drive. (You need two available USB ports on your computer. One for power, and one to connect the LaCie external optical drive. This USB cable, is called an Interface cable)

The USB end, that goes into your computer, (Laptop or Desktop computer), is the USB A style end. (Male) This is what it looks like,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB_TypeA_Plug.JPG

The USB end, that plugs into the Lacie optical burner drive, is a USB Mini-B style end. (Male) It looks like this,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB_types_2.jpg
It is the second one from the left side.

Where I'm at, we have Walmart stores. At Walmart they sell a USB adapter kit, made by Philips. This kit has a USB A to USB A cable, that both ends are Male. This cable is on a little retractable reel. The reel is about the size of a USA fifty cent piece. In the kit are five different styles of USB adapter ends. They just plug on that USB A to USB A style cable. (On the small reel) One of those adapter ends is a Mini-B USB male end. It has a Female USB A socket on one side, and a Male USB MIni-B end, on the other side. The kit sells for about $12 dollars.

Should you find that somehow, this USB power cable does not give enough power to your LaCie external optical burner drive, then here is LaCie.com, Products, Support & Downloads, and the Power Supply, for your LaCie DVD+RW 301230U external optical drive,

External USB DVD-RW

Hi Nick,
this may be a driver conflict issue, either with your factory fitted drive.
try going into system/device manager and see if its in there, click remove or uninstall, reboot and plug the drive in again, go through the add new hardware wizard if need be.
the other suggestion, is to remove all USB devices from The device manager, reboot and the system will re-install the USB port drivers.
