After you plug it into the projector, you need to tell the computer to send the output to the VGA. This is done by pressing a combination of the Fn key and an Fx key, usually the F4 key; it will have a picture of a screen on it in blue. Press it once will direct all output to the VGA port, press it twice will show the picture on the laptop and the VGA port, and pressing it again shows on the laptop only.
Caution is advised, as getting everything to work again after you put it back together is normally difficult, especially the screen.
You will have to remove all the panels underneath, all screws and look for screws around the screen hinge area, with hexagon heads.
There are no instructions on acer notebooks on their site for obvious reasons.
