My dog will eat our food but will not eat his , he is being given wainrights he just wants our food

  • patrick_j950 Oct 16, 2019

Sounds like a picky eater. Some say to force the dog to eat only his food. Whatever you do,do not just change his food. Do it gradually.

You could also do what my mother would do. She would take a bit of dog food and then eat her food. When the dog starts begging, she would give the dog some dog food. And it does work.

The cause can be sickness or there could be something wrong with the food - like oxidised kibble. More commonly though: if your puppy will only eat human food, it's probably a behavioural issue or change his food

Try giving your dog a more 'meatier' food. Tesco sell a dog food called 'feed me' and its good food. Stop feeding your dog human food it's not good for them and besides would you eat a 'burger' if you could have 'steak'?

Perhaps you can eat HIS food, so that, thinking it is your food, he copys you. No, seriously, many pets crave what we are eating; it is part of their natural social structure to share the "hunt," whatever that may be. As their second family, they often expect us to do the same. We used to eat the Milk Bone Five Flavor Dog Biscuits when we were kids. Not bad. Captain Crunch and many other cereals look like dog kibble. You could pretend to dish out his, then pull a bait and switch. LOL

Got the same problem dog knocks over its dry food all over the place but doesn't eat it. Been thinking my dog is older maybe I need to soak the dry food with some warm water to soften the dry food.

A dog can go without food for a few days and then will eat when it is hungry. Just stop giving your dog your food and at its normal feeding time give it a bowl of its food. If it does not eat it, take the food away. Then 24 hours later put the bowl of food out for the dog. If it has not eaten it within ten minutes take it away and then 24 hours later put the bowl of food out for the dog again. By now the dog should be happy to eat what it is given.

Get your finicky dog to eat his dry dog food

There are many benefits to feeding your dogs a healthy diet. If their diet consists of dry dog food, they may start to become reluctant to eating it. Recently our 2 year old golden retrievers just stopped eating their dog food. They used to spin and jump and were so excited to eat. Now we get these smug stares as if they are saying, "really? again!" - After trying a number of different flavors we discovered that they can become bored with the texture, odor and mouth feel of the food. If this happens to you, try this tip if they are on a dry diet. Take their food and add some water to it, so it coats all the kibble. Then place it in the microwave for about 20 to 30 seconds. Mix it up. The odor changes slightly and the texture is much softer - this tricks them into thinking they are getting something new / different. So far it has worked every time and we are no longer stuck with multiple bags of uneaten expensive dog food. Hope this helps.

Problems with dogs eating cat food

The following is advice from the ASPCA
Cat food is higher in protein and fat, which may make it very palatable to dogs, but if you continue to feed your dog only cat food, over time you'll begin to see nutritional imbalances. It's also possible to see gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting and diarrhea, in dogs who continually eat cat food.

My dog eats its food way too fast. Is there a specific kind of bowl that can make it eat more slowly?

There are the slow-down eating bowls that slow down the dog's eating. The bowl's design doesn't allow the dogs to eat their food quickly. It includes both narrow areas and obstacles. Look at this link to see how these types of bowls look like: http://0.tqn.com/d/petsupplies/1/0/1/3/-/-/b1.jpg

My dog eats everything but is there something's that he shouldn't eat?

You should never let your dog eat chicken bones as these have small sharp fragments that could choke your dog. Also Grapes, onions, chocolate, raisins, salt and tomatoes are toxic to dogs so you should never let them eat any of those foods.
