If the mixer is working on the other speeds, it needs adjustment to the speed control plate. See the Service Manual:

Mixer doesn't work on all speeds

First the K45SS does not have a hall effect sensor. the pro series the epicurean seines and the pro series 5 use them, The K45ss system uses a phase control board a speed control plate and a governor for speed control. the governor rarely goes out the phase control board is a likely culprit but the system would work only in high gear if it was bad. I agree with the guest above in that it sounds like the retaining nuts on the adjusting screws of the speed control board have worked themselves loose and the adjustment screws themselves have vibrated out of proper position.

Hi Emma,
Not going to be much help here to be honest. We have the KM020 and this is the only problem we have had with heavy machine use in 4 years - and a minor issue at that.

Electric mixer worksa at a very slow speed. the unit was unused for close to 7yrs. opened it up and found white powdery coating on the stator.

White powder is flour. Take pictures as you disassemble. Look for broken wires, and do not break any yourself. If there are any broken wires and you do not know how to solder, may be time to seek help or buy a new one. If there is a strong smell of burnt plastic or obvious burnt things, buy a new one. Clean everything. Polish commutators (copper fingers) with scotch bright, then 600 grit sandpaper from auto parts store. Oil bearings with a very small drop of oil, car or sewing machine. If it still doesn't work, go back to auto parts store and buy some spray "brake cleaner" Outside the house, spray it in the speed controller while working the lever/buttons. Disassemble controller if required. Let dry completely before applying power, sparks and cleaners do not mix well.

Our K5SS 300 watt mixer (30-40 years old) does not have a really slow speed anymore. We used it with the vegetable grinder accessory and when we were done it would not go slow on the slow speed. It went as...

the speed setting is in the speed control unit which by your statement is now broken
no parts around for the lovely old reliable machine which is now close to junk
take it to an appliance repair shop as they may have spare from another machine or can repair the fault

I bought the slicer and shredder set for the KitchenAid stand mixer, no instructions were in the box. What speed do I use the attachments on?

Your attachment speed will depend on what it is you're slicing or shredding. Begin at speed setting two and work up to the speed where the motor begins to labour, then reduce the speed by one notch. Always start too slow, then move up. If you find this solution usefull, please rate it. Good luck. ricardok45
