Want to put flash mem. into ipod photo

Is there a way to put a flash memory card into my Ipod Photo? The hard drive is a little iffy these days, and flash cards are getting cheaper and cheaper. I have never soldered anything before, and do not know how crazy I would want to get, but I am willing to give it a try; popping in a 16 or 32 gb flash card has got to be significantly cheaper than buying a new gen iPod, and I really have no desire to sink money into a replacement drive with moving parts if I can avoid it (as cool as the 1.8" drives are).

What do you think?

  • jpeimer Jul 09, 2009

Thank you! The adapters appear to be pretty cheap, which is spectacular. I don't suppose you know of a good tutorial somewhere for doing something like this, and possibly a disk utilities thing to do up a partition?

My next question is: SDHC cards are a bit cheaper than CF cards. There exists an adaptor from SDHC to CF. In short, am I better off (once the HD in the ipod finally dies) buying a 32GB CF card, or is this adapter for an adapter idea worth while?

    Thanks again.

It's not hard. and in fact doesn't even involve any soldering - the only memory card format that is electrically compatible with an ATA drive is Compact Flash - but you can get adaptor cards that will let you plug them directly into the ZIF interface that the 1.8" HDDs use.

Obviously, you want the biggest CF card you can get your hands on - once you install it, you will need to connect to itunes and do a system restore, since obviously there is nothing written on the CF card.

I have done this myself with an iPod classic and a 32GB CF card - the battery life seeems slightly improved, but only slightly.

I haven't used those adaptors, so I can't really comment constructively on them. My gut feeling is that they might be significantly slower than CF cards are, since CF cards have a wider interface.

I didn't have to use any disk partitioning software - all I did was zero out the drive and the plug in into iTunes in disk mode - iTunes then said that the iPod required a system restore, downloaded the firmware and wrote it into the CF card.

I didn't actually use a guide in taking mine apart - I just rushed in as usual :) - but this guide here looks pretty complete:

After deleted Pictures n Videos by mistake, how to recover PICTURES n Video in FUJIFILM FINEPIX F300EXR?

First of all, do not save any new file to camera's memory card.

Take out memory card, and connect it to computer using a card reader. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer.
Download this camera photo and video recovery software
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
Install and open the data recovery software, select the memory card, and click 'Next' button.

Vikram, first of all take no more pictures with the memory card. You'll need to use recovery software to recover your photos. There are very many freeware options for your to choose (here's a short listing with reviews). You'll need to use your computer's card reader with this software. Now AFTER you've recovered your photo's, you'll need to initialize (format) the card in your camera (DON'T use your computer to initialize the card). This will erase the card, but it will also help prevent this instance from reoccurring. Look in your camera's menus for the format option.

Summary iTunes 4.7 and later has the ability to sync photos from your computer to any iPod with a color display (including Fifth Generation iPod, iPod nano and iPod photo). Find out the answers to common questions about photo syncing.
Products Affected iTunes, iPod, iPod nano, iPhoto 4.x, iPhoto 5.x, iPhoto 6.x, iPhoto 7.x, Windows, Adobe Phototshop
What sources can iTunes sync from?
iTunes 4.7 and later for Mac OS X can sync from:
  • iPhoto 4.0.3 or later
  • A selected folder of photos
iTunes 4.7 and later for Windows can sync from:
  • Adobe Photoshop Album 1.0
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0
  • A selected folder of photos
Note: You cannot select a folder to which you do not have write access, like a CD. Later versions of Adobe Photoshop Album are not compatible. iTunes will only present the option to select a folder if a later versions is installed.
How much hard drive space do I need to sync my photos?
You need to have about as much free space on your hard drive as the size of your collection of photos. iTunes constructs a photo database on your hard drive in order to make photo syncing fast when you add new photos in the future.
What file formats can I sync to my iPod?
See iPod: Compatible photo formats for a list of file formats that can be used.
Can I sync my photos to my iPod manually?
You can't drag individual photos or groups of photos to the iPod like you can with music files in iTunes, but you can choose how you want them to be synchronized (see below) by selecting the correct options:
iTunes 7 or later:
  1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
  2. Select the iPod icon when it appears in the iTunes window (below devices).
  3. If the Photos pane does not show, click the Photos tab.
  4. Select your photo syncing options.
In iTunes 6.0.5 or earlier:
  1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
  2. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu (Macintosh) or Edit menu (Windows).
  3. Select iPod.
  4. Select Photos.
  5. Select your photo syncing options.
The syncing options include:
  • If you use iPhoto 4.0.3 or later in Mac OS X, you can have iTunes automatically sync all of your photos and albums or just certain albums every time you connect your iPod.

  • If you are using Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 3.0 or later, you can sync all of your photos or just certain collections of photos.

  • If you are using Adobe Photoshop SE in Windows, you can sync either all of your photos or certain collections of photos. If you are using Adobe Photoshop Album SE in Windows, you can only sync all of your photos. Note: While Photoshop Album allows you to sync only certain collections, Photoshop Album SE does not allow you to assign collection tags that are required for this to work.
  • If you are not using any of the above applications, you can sync all of the photos in a selected folder, or only photos in specific folders inside the selected folder. Folders inside the selected folder will be displayed as photo albums on the iPod, but not subfolders beneath them.
Can I add photos from multiple computers or user accounts to one iPod?
No, adding photos can only happen from one computer or user account.
Can I sync photos from my iPod to another computer?
No, all photo syncing is one way only, from computer to iPod. You can put full-quality copies of all your photos on the iPod in the options available in the Photos pane. Then drag the full-quality photos out of the Photos folder on an iPod that has disk mode enabled to any other computer.
What does it mean when "Optimizing for iPod" appears in iTunes and what happens if I cancel?
iTunes creates TV-quality versions of your photos and stores them in a database on your computer. This makes it much faster when you add new photos to your iPod later. If you cancel this optimization, the photos are not added to the iPod.

My ipod says www.apple.com/support/ipod WHEN TRY TO CHARGE MY IPOD, IT BEGANS TO CHARGE AND STOPS AFTER A LITTLE WHILE.

Guys, if you have the ipod photo, I used to get the hard drive locking up , which would bring up the www.apple.com/support/ipod screen.

WHen you try to start it up, put the ipod to your ear and listen to hear if the hard drive is stuck-ie if you can hear the drive repeating a clicking noise, then it is stuck.

If it does this, hit the ipod with an open hand (like a slap). No joke. This is for real. Slap it a couple of times and then try to restart it. If it doens't work the first time, try it again. SOmetimes it works first go, sometimes it takes a few, but eventually it does work.
It seems like the hardware inside is stuck for some reason and slapping it fixes the problem.

My ipod has locked up about 5 or 6 times and each time it has worked for me.

Give it a go. Don't pay apple to get it fixed. They probably do the same thing and charge you hundreds for it.

Good luck!

Ipod Photo Troubleshooting

That icon is almost certainly indicative of a hard drive problem, and it will need service. I don't see a reason for the warranty not to cover this. You should insist with apple to take responsibility. If they shirk, we should at least always give them a hard time about it, never make it easy for companies to screw us - ask to be explained exactly whats their diagnosis of the problem and to qoute their policy that says why they won't cover your problem. I hope it works out, but here's a link to apples support site with some other things you might want to try - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93936 Good luck
