Scanner will not function

I bought a new computer 'Acer' and Windows Vista was installed on it. Now my HP Officejet 6100xi all-in-one will not scan. Doesn't even start it is like it isn't loaded at all. It worked just fine when I had windows XP. What can I do, I don't have the cd with me at home, it is probably in my office somewhere? The printer prints just fine, I do not have the manager setup as I did on the WindowsXP format.

The only way the scanner will work is to do the following:

Go to Start, all programs, assessories, paint, file and than to scanner and camera. This worked just fine. Thanks for all the suggestions it was helpful.

The text document still did scan correctly. A picture scans correctly but printed document with text results in a page scanning to my desktop wtih a ascii characters not readable.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=79477

and also note on same page...
"You might find that some of the advanced features are no longer available when using this basic driver. You can upgrade to an HP product that is fully compatible with Windows Vista if the advanced features are necessary"

and also note Scanning with Windows Fax and Scanning
NOTE: This feature works only with Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Enterprise
Your disks I don't think will help, looks like it is case of Not fully vista compatable, there are also issues relating to your old HP Director software ie...

"In October 2006, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7. The HP Director software that shipped with some HP products introduced between 2002 and 2004 may not be compatible with Internet Explorer 7. The HP Solution Center software, which replaced HP Director software, does not exhibit this issue with Internet Explorer 7."

How do i scan documents onto my comp

It depends a bit on the software you have installed (OS, etc). If you installed the full-featured software before connecting the all-in-one to your computer, you can scan immediately from the computer. For Windows, open the HP Solution Center (by double-clicking on the icon or Start > All Programs > HP folder > HP Solution Center). Put your document to be scanned face down on the scanner glass and close the lid (ADF pages go face up, top edge first). Click the tab in the Solution Center for your HP product (if you have more than one) and click Scan Picture or Scan Document as appropriate. Set the scanner settings in the pop-up window if needed. Click Scan to start the scan. To use the buttons on the scanner, you need to set the destinations for the buttons in the HP Solution Center (Scan to destination for example) and have the HP monitor running on your computer (this listens to the buttons).

Scanners work with bi-directional communication so USB hubs, print servers or bad cables can result in the printer functions working but not the scanner.

If you install the generic OS driver (by connecting the all in one to the computer before installing the software), the printer will work but the scanner will functions will be limited (the scanner buttons will not work but other functions will depend on the OS). Windows XP can acquire scans in Paint (File > From Camera or Scanner). Windows Vista and Win7 add Windows Fax and Scan which will also acquire scans (not in all versions of Vista). Vista also can acquire scans with Windows Photo Gallery.

The printer works similarly with the Mac OS but hte names may be different.

I hope this helps.

I can't scan

You'll need the Vista drivers installed on your computer. Were you running XP before? Visit the HP website and download the current Vista drivers -- there may be different drivers for the printer and scanner functions.

Can't scan with my HP officejet 4255 all-in-one

Hi
Hope you doing well this year and i am sure that thing will go good as well

the problem you mentioned : When you press the Scan button on the product control panel, nothing happens. A scan does not start.

This issue usually occurs because you do not have the full feature driver installed for the product. Button functions on the product control panel require a full feature software and driver installation for Windows Vista.

Follow these steps to download and install the full feature software from the HP Web site.

1) Turn the product on.
2) Disconnect any USB cable from both the product and the computer.
3) Open a new window to browse to the Select Software and Drivers page:
Click on the Following Link to get the Updated drivers for all OS

DRIVERS HP Officejet 4255

4) Click / select the Operating system
5) Click the Full Feature Software and Drivers option.

6) Click Download only . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
7) Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
8) Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
Tip: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
9) When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
10) You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
11) When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
