First - try different SD cards to be sure it is not the card at fault. I assume it is showing up in Windows Explorer - it should be shown as a Removable Drive with a drive letter - on mine it is G: - Note that autoplay might be turned off, so any inserted card may not pop-up automatically. Assuming the card is fine and it fails to show up in Windows Explorer, or if the drive itself is not in Windows Explorer, look in the device manager to be sure the SD reader device is being recognized by windows and if it is enabled - if it says disabled on not working properly, try to reinstall the driver. In my device manager, it shows up under Disk drives as a multi-card USB device and under Portable devices, it shows up as G:/. Alternatively, go to the HP site and see if there is an updated driver - if so, download and install that, reboot and test it again. IF these all fail, it could be a hardware problem.
If the card-reader states it's for a mini-sd card, then you should just be able to insert the mini-sd card into one of the slots. However, some card readers double-up on slots by making it so more than one card-type can be inserted into the same slot. See if the mini-sd card can be put into one of the slots successfully. Tip: Read your manual before doing so, so you don't get card stuck in wrong slot.
There is a write-protection tab on the mini sd card HOLDER. Every time you insert this into your PC or card holder, this tab slides to the write protect position. Either keep resetting, inserting & reinserting until it doesn't slide or tape it down.
There is nothing wrong with the mini sd card. Simply locate the write protection key and push it.
The mini sd card has some error: Go for a low level formatting.
The card has virus: Remove the virus. The link for the steps is present in the related link at the bottom of the article.

Check your mini SD card and see if it has the SDHC (high capacity) logo on it. Originally SD cards, including the mini SD, had a 2GB limit by protocol. The DC10 was introduced when this was the most advanced protocol. Since then the SDHC protocol has been introduced, but the DC10 is not compatible with SDHC. You need to get a mini SD, 2GB maximum capacity.
Is the SD card a mini type or a standard SD card?
The standard SD card is 24mm wide X 32mm long.
If it is a mini SD card you need to purchase a mini SD to standard SD adapter, then you will be able to insert it in your Compaq.
