I have a hp elitebook 2730p with Vista Ultimate loaded. It hangs during bootup. It goes through post and initialization but once the splash screen comes up it hangs. Tried to reload Windows and ran HP diagnostics. Diagnostics reports all tests pass. Still have problem at boot. Any ideas? Thanks.

You will need to contact HP and arrange to have it reset. This is a business class machine and the BIOS password feature is meant to be a theft deterrent and usually cannot be defeated by an end user.

Press F11 during bootup. Keep hitting it until something comes up on your screen. Then choose Restore to Factory Settings. Note: you will loose all your files. So backup your files before performing this operation.

Hi it may be worth pressing the FN+F5 keys just to make sure that it is not in standby


or you could try this


power up and straightaway tap the F8 key a few times
this may take you into the repair option
then choose the last known good configuration
windows will then restart and try to put it back to when it was last working ok

Windows XP is too old to have the drivers for it. You will have to reload Win 7 or find out what the password is. Here are a couple of options for you.

Lost user password in XP with networking set-up on HP

The best way to do this is using the Offline NT Password & Registry editor.

The same thing has been happening to my tablet lately, as well. However, on mine, that corner of the computer is slightly damaged (from shoving it into my backpack too roughly, i guess). Is your hp damaged? Otherwise, it's probably a hardware problem.

In case of your HP laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper and I wouldn't recommend doing it especially if it's under warranty.
