Can a drop cause a capacitor to bulge?

Hello, I dropped my PS3 and it won't turn on now. The capacitors in the power supply are bulged. Could this be caused by the drop? Thanks.

Caps arent supposed to bulge but hard to say that a drop caused it.was the power on when you dropped it? ..you can always test the caps with a multimeter to see if they are bad. I would guess that a bulging cap will cause no power, but it may not be the only issue...Good luck

Not likely. Caps are likely bulging due to heat, and are near end of life. Even if you didn't drop it, it would fail when a cap failed altogether.

Dropped PS3 and it won't power on

If you dropped it and it won't power up now check the power button ribbon cables. If they are seated properly then you damaged the motherboard and you will need to replace the ps3. Don't drop them as they are fragile.

if no any light indicator at the front panel of the monitor, the cause would be power supply failure. to do the check up, you must need to remove the back cover. the power supply board it was connected the power cord. look for a blown fuse and a bulging electrolytic capacitors at the power supply board.replaced those bulged capacitors, you can find at www.digikey.com for parts replacement.

Good day!!!!

That problem is usually cause of faulty capacitors on the power supply board..

Just follow this instruction to fix your TV..

1. Open the back cover of your TV.
2. Look at the power supply board..Its normally connected to the power cord..
3. After that,,try to look at the actual image of capacitors if it is bulged on the top so that you can easily determine the bad capacitors..
4. After that,,try to replaced the bad capacitors using soldering iron and soldering lead..replaced the capacitors only with the same type ratings and value..
5. Some of the capacitors not bulged so its better if have a capacitance meter

Sir before replacing the board try to check first the power supply, this fault is commonly cause by bulging capacitor or leaky capacitor, this bad capacitor is producing a low and unfiltered dc output that causes your unit to malfunction.

This is the bulging capacitor if you see this replace with the same type and observe polarity, capacitor is much cheaper than the whole power supply board replace this and it will fix the problem hope this help good day and best regards.

Hello The problem of your television is cause of faulty power supply. The power supply have abnormal voltage output supply because of leak capacitor. If you want to fix the problem of your TV,this is the procedure,First is remove the back cover and find the power supply. You can see the bulging tops of capacitors, thats the leak capacitor.Replace all new capacitor with the same value.Avoid short circuit in PCB board of power supply. If you can't do the to repair, call a technician or repair to authorized service center.Thanks..

I have a RCA 32" Flat Screen TV that shut off and

Hi,

The sound was came from the clicking of the relay. This kind of symptoms is an indication of out-of-regulation condition on the power supply section. This is caused by faulty electrolytic capacitor. It will dropped the supply voltage and will trigger that kind of symptoms.

Faulty electrolytic capacitor mostly has a physical indication of fault like bulged/dome at the top and can be easily identified. See sample picture of faulty electrolytic capacitor below.

capacitor with bulged/dome at the top.

Check these parts on the power supply section. Once found, replaced it with same capacitance and working voltage which is printed on its body itself. Click this LINK for more info regarding electrolytic capacitor.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't troubleshoot the unit yourself, I would advice you to look for a qualified TV Technician to isolate the faulty parts.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

When plugged in the b lue light will turn yellow and nothing works

Hi,

This kind of symptoms is an indication of out-of-regulation on the output of the power supply section. The most common caused of this fault is the faulty electrolytic capacitor in that board. It will dropped the supply voltage and will disable the unit.
Leaky electrolytic capacitor has a physical indication of fault like bulged/dome at the top and can be easily identify. See sample picture of faulty capacitor below.

faulty capacitor with bulged/dome at the top

Dried electrolytic capacitor has no physical indication of fault, you must have a capacitor checker to determine its condition and pinpoint the faulty one.

If your unit is not under warranty period/extended warranty, open the back cover and check the power supply board(where the power cord's directly connected) for faulty capacitor. If you found it replaced it with same capacitance and working voltage that is printed on its body itself.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

TV had no picture first and then no sound. I have unpugged TV and still nothing happens. There is a blinking red light on that can be seen from rear of TV ( 1 blink on and off). Thanks for your help.

Good day!

Please follow this procedure to fix your problem:
  1. Open the cover of your TV.Remove all screws at the back.
  2. Next, power ON the TV and check the output voltage of power supply using voltmeter.
  3. It should have not less than 5vdc for system board,12vdc for sounds and 24vdc for inverter board. If the 3 supplies are got a voltage drop your power supply had problem. For example if you check the 5vdc then the reading is 4.50vdc only.
  4. If you have voltage drop, check some leak/bulge on top capacitor on power supply.replace it using soldering iron and soldering pump.
  5. When the power supply looks like OK,no voltage drop and no leak/bulge on top capacitor. The problem is your system board or main board. There's no easy remedy for that. You have to replace the whole system board.
A Power supply is like this..(It is not actually look like yours but it was just for your Idea)
