Says plz. i what to do
Sometimes just pressing on the cartridge on the side of the memory chip, till the cartridge says click.
also make sure there is nothing is in the cartridge holder like dust or a scrap of paper so a chip can't make contact.
Epson is know for this there is one thing you can try that usually works!
Pull out a plain ol WHITE ERASER! take out the cartridge and use the eraser on the chip. Be sure to brush off any pieces that might be left behind. Pop the cartridge back in and hit OK.

ughhhh I'm having the same problem... STUPID MAGENTA
SOURCE: Just installed Epson NX400 printer.
I found a solution to the same prolem that you guys have. I took the cartridges out and shook them horizontally, instead of vertically, with the large surface up for 3-4 seconds. Re-inserted them back in. Then I started seeing on the LCD "Recharging Cartridge". When it returned to regular copy screen, I turned the printer off and turned it back on. No more error message. It's been working for almost a day now. Try it to see if that works for you. Good Luck.
FYI. I just bought NX400 last Friday. The error message came on this morning.

Try to run the ink pad reset utility software.
Please log on to epson.com. The software runs on win xp and win vista.

i had this happen to me twice with two different people, it is highly possible that your black inks are defective, its also highly possible that one of the other inks are causing this error. take them all out, and put one and see what happens, do this one at a time until you see something screwey.
also possible, the contacts on the printhead are dirty or are pushed in.
also possible, bad printhead.
