Sometimes just pressing on the cartridge on the side of the memory chip, till the cartridge says click.
also make sure there is nothing is in the cartridge holder like dust or a scrap of paper so a chip can't make contact.

Epson is know for this there is one thing you can try that usually works!
Pull out a plain ol WHITE ERASER! take out the cartridge and use the eraser on the chip. Be sure to brush off any pieces that might be left behind. Pop the cartridge back in and hit OK.

SOURCE: Just installed Epson NX400 printer.

I found a solution to the same prolem that you guys have. I took the cartridges out and shook them horizontally, instead of vertically, with the large surface up for 3-4 seconds. Re-inserted them back in. Then I started seeing on the LCD "Recharging Cartridge". When it returned to regular copy screen, I turned the printer off and turned it back on. No more error message. It's been working for almost a day now. Try it to see if that works for you. Good Luck.

FYI. I just bought NX400 last Friday. The error message came on this morning.

Try to run the ink pad reset utility software.

SOURCE: "Ink cartridges cannot be recognized" when using genuine Epson

i had this happen to me twice with two different people, it is highly possible that your black inks are defective, its also highly possible that one of the other inks are causing this error. take them all out, and put one and see what happens, do this one at a time until you see something screwey.

also possible, the contacts on the printhead are dirty or are pushed in.

also possible, bad printhead.

My Epson Stylus NX400 won't recognize any of the ink cartridge after I performed a head cleaning and nozzle check option. There are still ink inside and they are original genuine ink. What should I do?

Did you remove the ink cartridge when you did the head cleaning and nozzle check, if so, did you touch the copper circuit chip on the cartridge? . . The chip is normally what tells the printer how much ink is remaining in the cartridge and if it cannot read this, it may not recognise that the cartridge is genuine and still has ink remaining inside. . . .You can try cleaning the chip with a soft dry cloth otherwise you may have to install a replacement cartridge. . . Have Epson DX8400. Have tried to to replace the black ink cartridge with Epsons own ink:0711, but printer will not accept. Have tried with a different make but still no joy. Had printer for 2 1/2 years and...

The cartridges are chipped, you have to use all genuine epson or an equivalent with the correct chips. Not all replacement carts are correctly chipped. If you do have genuine cartridges fitted remove them all and clean the gold chip part with a soft tissue and firmly seat the carts. Hope that helps.

hi,

I have heard many stories pertaining to Epson printers, and a few stories with your problem and with this model too.

Unplug the printer, remove the cartridges, then make sure they are put back in and seated properly and turn on the printer. Hit up a nozzle and head clean on the printer cartridges, then try to use. If this does not work, it might be an issue relating directly to the ink you are using, Epson printers can get funny if you are not using genuine cartridges. If you do use compatibles, try changing the ones you are using.

Often or not, removing the cartridges when the unit is powered off, then starting unit and putting them back should resolve.

If the problem display is shown on your computer, simply uninstall the printer software and reboot your machine, then re-install software again.

Good luck, and i hopet his is the fixya for you. Also please do let me know the outcome of this matter.

Yours sincerely

Oz
