I don't know that much about computers, and I have been told three different things, and I need help!
I have a Presario, which is supposed to be able to hold 2gb of memory. It came installed with 512mb of memory, I purchased two 1gb sticks, Kingston brand, pc2-5300, 667mhz to go into it, because Best Buy told me thats what I needed for this pc. When I left the 512mb in the first slot, and inserted a 1gb into the second slot, it told me (under SYSTEM) I had 1.50gb ram. I took out the 512mb, and inserted another 1 gb, and it then told me i had 1.00gb ram when there was actually 2 in there. I switched the sticks with each other, tried that, and also tried each stick individually in both slots and both slots work, and both sticks work. Im not sure if this means anything, but one of the sticks has those little black square things on only one side, and the other stick has them on both sides. They only insert into the pc one way, so I know I have them in correctly, and I know that both slots as well as both sticks work fine. But it always tells me i only have 1 gb ram. I checked the BIOS screen, and it says:
Memory Bank 1-1024mb
Memory Bank 2-Not Installed
Well in a weird situation like the one you have, i suggest inserting one of them into the Memory Bank 2 slot. After that, start up your Computer and shut it down. If it says you have 1GB then that's good. After that, put the other one in the free slot and start it up. I hope i helped, i can't think of what else would work for that.
Worst Comes to worst, just get the one that seems weird replaced with a new one from Best Buy. They should do it free of charge.
Try upgrade your bios
here is the link for your bios upgrade:

by the way the 512 MB ram is ddr400
Here are your memeopry specs from HP
Memory Single-channel memory architecture
2 x 240-pin DIMM sockets
Supports PC2-3200 (400 MHz), PC-4200 (533 MHz) and PC2-5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs
non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 2 GB
Crucial states
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.
I think I understand what you are saying.
I always dig out my hardware / mother board manual and see what it says about the different types of memory your system will accept. If you don't have it you should be able to find it online.
I'm surprised if you bought two memory modules at the same time that one is single sided and the other is double sided. My guess is that your system does not like to have mixed single and double sided modules.
If this is in fact the case I would complain to the people you bought them from that you did not get a matched pair of memory modules.
It would be fair to expect that you wanted to use them both in the same machine.
Try to check the second memory slot alone with the two 1 GB alone also then go to bios and also check the solts which one is working also if not working try to clean the pinout of the memory stick with clean piece from the' dust
