Protection mode usually means there is a problem in the amplifier circuitry. You will need to have the unit checked by an authorized tech if the unit is under warranty.
Usually the headphone jack is like a mechanical switch and it's probably just not making a good connection inside. Use the correct size headphone jack and insert it then remove it maybe a couple of times and see if that fixes it.

You can select the display mode for the front display of the SR7001.To select this mode, press the DISPLAYon the remote control or the front panel. When this button is pressed, the display mode is switched in the following sequence.Input Mode?Surround Mode?Auto display OFF?Display OFF?Normal Mode?Input ModeNormal Mode:Displays the selected input function. If the function has been renamed using the Function Rename feature (see page 26), the renamed name appears on the display.Input Mode:Displays the input mode set via the Function Input Setup feature (see page 25).Surround Mode:Displays the status of the selected surround mode.Auto Display Off mode:The display is off. But, if you make a change to the unit such as the input or surround mode, the display will show that change, then go back to off after about 3 seconds. When changing the volume, it is not displayed.Display Off mode:The display is off completely.Note: • Only the DISP indicator will be illuminated on thefront display in display off condition http://www.scribd.com/doc/53431794/Marantz-SR-8001-Owners-Manual
Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.
Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.
You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.
If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.
If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.
Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.
it is not made to drive 4 ohm loads.also if you measure the impedance on the speaker,at some frequencies,it is closer to 3 ohms. This will cause the amplifier to shut down.Today's amplifiers are embellished specs.the old marantz 2325 was 125 watts a channel and weighed 80 pounds. It would eat alive some of the 1000 watt home theater amps of today.Marantz is very nice stuff.
Hold the VCR/DVR button in and press the ON/OFF Standby button. The display should briefly read CLEAR and then the unit switches off. If that clears protect mode, you'll need to redo the Audyssey and configuration setup as these will have been cleared by the reset.
Try pressing the power, and multi speaker button at the same time. But first turn the unit off...then press the above buttons at the same time...This is for the SR6001... GH
