Batteries were put in wrong. Nothing else it could be. Most likely is was your DC capacitors blowing up.

SOURCE: desk top APC UPS ES750 not communicating

Here is an answer I got from APC when one of my client got the same problem as you did:

The error message would pop up if the link between the computer and the UPS is weak. I cannot rule out a problem with the cable or the UPS. In order to confirm the same please try the following steps which might help :

1) Ensure that the USB cable is properly connected to the USB port of the computer.

2) If the PC was powered on before the UPS, communication will not be achieved until you disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to the host. In this case, you need to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to establish communication.

3) Some other software is polling your USB port for another device, thus causing the UPS software to temporarily lose communication with your UPS. If this is the case, you would need to shut down that application.

4) If you have any other USB devices connected to the PC, disconnect them and then try plugging in the cable.

If the issue persists, please visit the following link which lists few troubleshooting steps :

SOURCE: APC UPS 1500 w/full load forces immediate reboot at pwr failure

Hello,

With a 980watt load the run time is only 7 minutes on a brand new battery. If you have the system on full load your run time will be much less and it has likely damaged the battery. here is the APC web site page for your model. If you are running that much equipment I think you need either a bigger UPS or another 1500 and spread the load out.

SOURCE: APC back-ups XS 800 battery backup : warning

Turn it off and unplug it from the wall.
Open it up and make sure that the red and black wires are connected.
If they are the battery needs to be replaced. They are only good for 2-3 years. If you are not comfortable with my instructions, call APC for free support. (800) 555-2725

My ups periodically cuts out and comes back as if a reset button is being pressed. The replace battery light is not on but I'm wondering if that's the problem or if the unit is just dying.

could be a battery or it could be a problem with the power supply not being consistent voltage
units seldom die but the internal battery is susceptible to failure over a period of time

APC RS 1500 82v output

Many UPS Systems have a squared wave when working on batteries. Cheap multimeters do not give the correct measure on squared waves. Connect a 100 watts resistive lamp to the output of the UPS, if the light is almost the same when UPS is working on batteries, everythinf is fine.

I have an APC XS 1500 UPS. We recently had a power outage and now the display states "event 9" and the unit beeps every 15 minutes or so.

This "Event 9" means that the UPS has has 9 events. It could be going on battery or a high input or output. Either way we can reset it. You will have to turn on the UPS. Unplug it from the wall and also unplug the battery. When all is unpluged push and hold the power button for a few seconds. This is the reset. once done hookup the batteries and plug in the ups. All should be better. Event 9 will be gone. Till next time..... When it will say "Event 10"

APC SMARTUPS 1500VA Battery Problem When Replaced

You are correct. The APC Smart line has a partial charge when it's new. Similar to cordless phones, the work right away, but you're still supposed to charge them before use for best results.

Just leave it plugged in with no load for a couple hours and it will be fine.
