Frigidaire oven FGB24L2ASA. Igniter glows red, gas turns on, but does not light.

Previously, igniter glowed red but gas did not turn on. I replaced igniter, now gas turns on, but does not light.

I can light the burner with a match, but the ignitor does not light it. The flame looks good. The ignitor continues to glow red hot the entire time the gas is on. I installed the new, matching igniter in the same was as the old one. I bent the mount to move it closer to the gas flow. Still no ignition of gas. Maybe the gas pressure is too low or the igniter is too far away?

I appreciate your inquiry, K Ogle!

From what you have described about your Frigidaire range the igniter glows red and the gas turns on but it will not light. It sounds like it could be a faulty burner or igniter and I would recommend having a professional come out to properly assess your range. This does not sound like a simple DIY job. Good luck. -Matt

SOURCE: Bosch HGS442UC Gas Oven won't light

Usually when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake igniter is weak or burned out. The igniter is a small, round or rectangular device, that's about 1 inch by 4 to 8 inches. It's near the burner itself.

The burner is the tube-type device the gas flows through before it's ignited. It has many small holes on the sides to let the gas, when ignited, form a long, low flame. If the igniter is weak, if it glows red but doesn't get hot enough, or if it's burned out, the gas doesn't flow to the burner and the burner won't ignite. If this is the problem, you may need to replace either the igniter or the gas safety valve. Usually the igniter is to blame.

Other causes Other reasons that your oven may not bake are:

  • The clock settings are incorrect (if you have timed baking or a self-cleaning oven).

  • The thermostat is defective.

  • The safety valve that prevents accidental gas flow is defective.

  • The selector switch is defective.

SOURCE: Kenmore gas stove, broiler works but oven won't

Hello, I'll start by saying this may sound odd considering the info you provided, "ignitor glows...". It is actually the ignitor you'll need to replace. Being that I do service for sears I've replaced numerous ignitor's, both bake & broil, but bake being most common as it is typically used more frequently. I'll try to explain... The simpliest way to put it is this, the hot surface ignitors function like a large resistor. As the ignitor glows it reaches a value to allow the gas valve to open and lite the burner. If the ignitor is even slightly worn/off it won't ignite the burner, hence it need's to be replaced. Hope that help's explain what & why. If so please take a second to rate the solution I provided here at fixya. Good luck and thanks for visiting fixya. Macmarkus :)

Oven will not light. it is a frigidaire model #

When the bake igniter becomes weak or burns out, your oven will not bake. The bake igniter is usually mounted on the oven burner. It's about 1 inch by 4-8 inches (depending on the model), and comes in round or flat styles. If you don't see the igniter glow at all, it's probably burned out. Replace the igniter if found defective. Note: one of the exceptions could be that your oven is set to automatic mode instead of manual. If this is the case, set your oven to manual mode and check again.

If the bake igniter glows red and not bright yellow or white, it is probably because it is too weak. When this happens, the safety valve will not let the gas out into the oven burner. A weak igniter must be replaced.

A faulty igniter is probably the most common cause, however there are others:

  1. Defective thermostat
  2. Defective selector switch
  3. Defective gas safety valve
  4. Defective gas valve coils

The lower oven ignighter does not glow

I had the same problem and swapped the oven igniter with the broiler igniter and the oven now works. This proved the oven igniter itself was the fault, now I have to replace the broiler igniter with a new one(which is much easier to get to).

FYI: An igniter may glow red and still not allow the oven to work. The igniter has to draw a certain amount of electrical current for the main gas valve to open.

The clock(computer?)broke so I replaced that part it seems to work. I then tried the oven it will not light. The ignition glows red but does not light the gas. I can smell gas. I tried lighting the oven...

Just because an igniter glows, does not necessarily mean it is good. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

It sounds like you may have had a couple of problems. The gas smell concerns me though. If an igniter is weak, you shouldn't get any gas flow in the oven. This is a designed safety feature that prevents free flowing gas from filling up the oven cavity without ignition. I would recommend checking your igniter for the proper current and/or replace. The link I provided, lists the steps required. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

THE OVEN WILL NOT HEAT

How old is the unit? Sometimes the igniter can glow but if it isn't drawing the right amount of power to open the gas valve then that is the safety that is built into the oven... So unless the power requirement is meant gas valve will not light. Even though the hot surface igniter is glowing red hot. chances are the igniter is bad. Let me know what turns up. ken

Frigidaire Gas Oven

The igniter needs to be replaced. I had the exact same thing happen to my oven. The igniter would glow, but after tested, it did not have enough amperage to actually ignite the gas, so the gas kept running with no ignition. You can get a replacement at an appliance parts store. If you have a friend or relative who is a heating/air conditioning repairperson they can test your current igniter. Good luck!

Oven

In many cases, even if the igniter is glowing, the resistance may not be low enough to turn on the gas valve. (It's the igniter that actually controls the gas valve) The igniter has probably gone bad. ($50.00 to $90.00 for igniter)

Kenmore Oven not working

Remove the bottom panel from inside the stove. Turn on the stove and see if the igniter glows bright red. If not glowing, replace the igniter. In some cases, even if the igniter is glowing, the resistance may not be low enough to turn on the gas valve. In either case the igniter has probably gone bad. ($50.00 to $90.00 for igniter)
