Hello Charlie,
A common external drive needs to be formatted to a file system that is supported by your computers operating system to be recognized.

If you are running windows you can use the Disk Management tool.

Both in Windows 7 and Windows 8, opening the Computer Management is done from the Control Panel. Go to System and Security -> Administrative Tools and double click on its shortcut.
The Storage section contains only the Disk Management tool.

Plug a monitor to the vga port or a tv onto the hdmi port and start the laptop.
Still blinking but you can use it through the other screen?
->Cable inside the machine for the lcd screen damaged.
If you don't see anything on the second screen try CTRL+F4 to mirror the main screen if nothing happen then the video module is dead.
