Re: why does my water heat keeps going out if a put a new...
That guy at home depot was not completely correct. If the pilot is not keeping the thermocouple warm, the pilot will not stay lit. Figure out why the cycle is being broken or call in a service tech to fix the unit. water heater

it might be the thermal coupler....it is a piece of wire that goes from the pilot to the thermostat. very inexpensive. .I am a 50 yr old woman, and I changed mine on my furnace twice..Home Depot or equivalent should be able to help. Google "thermal coupler"
if you have a pilot light but no flame you need a thermo coupler very easy to change but you need
to turn the gas off and pull the gun out at the end of the gun the pilot light heats the thermo coupler
that tells the gun it has a flame at the end and its ok to turn on the gas for a flame home depot will
carry a new one for you
you need to replace the thermocouple its an electronic device that keep the gas flowing . the pilot light is always on and the thermo couple controls the flame. if it goes bad the flame goes out and the burner wont come on to heat the water, they are easy to replace and available at all home depot or a lowes kind of store.
try using a jumper wire across the poles of the thermostat, if this works the thermostat is bad. if this does not work you may have a defective main gas valve
Thermo coupler may be defective. it controls the main gas valve by closing main if pilot is out. make sure thermo coupler bulb is positioned over and near tip of pilot flame, but not in the flame. Thermo couplers are inexpensive and easy to change out.
It sounds as tho the thermo coupler has gon bad. They are not to hard to replace if you are handy. You can pick them up at Home Depot or a hardware store. Good Luck
