The featherlight, and probably others by Dirt Devil are some of the worst designs I've ever encountered! The so called 'automatic' height adjustment consists of front wheels on a swivel mechanism that is forced up or down according to how high or low you are holding the vacuum. So, if you are holding the vacuum at a height for normal operation by it's very design it will be forced into the carpet too deeply which the belt cannot handle, thus breaking it in record time. The only way I was able to rectify this was by shoving a piece of cardboard under the wheels at an ideal height that would still pick up dirt but not bear down onto to the carpet! In conclusion, don't buy this piece of **** unless someone holds a gun to your head!!!!!!

SOURCE: Why does the belt keep breaking as soon as I turn

if your brush roller is froze up then the belt will keep breaking before you put a new belt on make sure you clean the motor shaft rubber from an old belt might still be on the shaft which will cause the new belt to run unevenly and break .your brush roller might not be turning freely try to pull the ends off the roller and clean the hair and carpet strands out of it

I replaced my vacuum belt and now when I turn my vacuum on it makes a loud noise to begin with and at the end also the belt is getting hot is that normal?

Can be either
1hair, debris around the brush roller
2 brush roll bearings have hair Etc, right on them

3 brush roll bearings worn badly .
Do they turn freely, take out and turn while putting light pressure with fingers, light twisting

4 belt issue,
Did the belt before this one break or wear maybe too soon which points back to Roller/ bearings/ hair

I have the G series Kirby silver vacuum, I was vacuuming and started to smell some burning. Looked down and my green light was off also. What could it be? PLS HELP

Your belt is burning and will eventually wear down and break. The green light comes from copper brushes on your roller creating an electrical current that lights the little green light. As long as the roller is turning, the light will stay on. There may be something jamming the roller (hair, string, paper, etc). Clean the roller off and replace your belt. If you don't replace the belt it will break soon enough. Once you start smelling the "rubber burning" smell it's and indication that your belt has deteriorated at some point and has a weak spot in it. Clean the roller and replace the belt and it should be fine.

The belt on my vacuum cleaner model 6596 bissel powerforce bagless turbo keeps breaking. As soon as I put on a new belt and start it up the belt snaps. It is the durabelt meant for this vacuum model....

I would guess you aren't centering the belt correctly, thus it's edge is caught between the brush and another solid object, causing the breakage.
When you get the belt on the the brush and the brush back in place, turn the brush a few times by hand to make sure it's not catching on anything. After you get the powerhead put back together, do this again. It's a common problem if the powerhead isn't assembled correctly.

Here's a video clip from the Bissell site demonstrating changing the belt.

We have had three belts break on your hoover vaccum cleaner u5472-940. It is easy to replace, you just remove the plastic part over it, put belt on wheel and then put it back on. Any idea on why the belt...

sometimes when you buy belts from the walmart or target, they are not at the correct specification and they brake as soon as you turn on the machine. i would suggest that you buy these belts from the company.

Why does the belt keep breaking as soon as I turn on the vacuum?

Hi Have you got the correct belt? If its breaking then the brush end caps or something is clogged. If you can get into the floor head ensure you look at the actual brush roll to see if there is anything is clogged or trapped. Remove all matter of dust and see if that works.

Belts keep breaking

Check the brush roll ends to see if they have melted or frozen. They should turn freely, part #361869-1. Make sure the belt isn't being pinched somewhere.

Dirt Devil M084600 Dynamite

Your roller won't turn. The belt is designed to break if anything threatens to keep the motor from turning. When you have the roller out, check the end caps to see if they rotate easily. If they do, then install a new belt being very careful that the belt is not pinched on the channel that it sits in. Once you have the belt installed, turn the roller by hand to make sure that there is no jamming or catching of anything. Install the plate and check the rotation again. Once you are satisfied that the roller turns easily, try the machine.
If the caps on the roller are jammed, as they will get from debris, hair and thread, etc., then you may have to replace the roller. The end caps on most of the Dirt Devils are carbon fibre and will break when you try to remove them.
