View -> toolbars - that's not it Windows Explorer options - nothing useful there The desktop has two windows that look more like toolbars, full screen width across the bottom (just above the task bar). They appear to be Explorer windows, but sans any window titles, status bars, menus, or anything useful - just a border and contents. One is a view of "This Computer" showing the C: drive, D: (DVD-ROM) drive, and additional HDD E:. The other is a view from the root of C: showing all the folders you'd expect to see there (Intel, Perflogs, Program Files...) as well as 2 non-hidden files. At the left end, both boxes have the small vertical "separators" line of "raised dots" that you used to see on the Windows XP task bar, and when you hover the mouse cursor over them it turns into two parallel lines & two arrows that normally indicates you can drag it from side to side to resize the segments - but nothing happens when you try that. There appears to be no way to close these boxes. They can be resized but not moved. Any idea what the hell they are and how do I get rid of them??? I'd love to post a screen-grab but it doesn't look like this forum allows that. If I open an Instagram account am I allowed to post a link here?
SOURCE: hidden files
Hi,
When you open the window "My Computer" you need to open the "Folder options". under "Folder Options" you have three tabs, you need to click on the "View" tab.
Under "View" tab you have an option as "Hidden files and folders", you may select the option according to your choice over there.
Note : - In win XP the "Folder options" are present under the "Tools" tab, however it might be under the "View" tab in the "my computer" in win 98. I don't have a Win 98 handy to check that. i am sure you would be able to find that out. Once you have the "Folder options" the steps are same as mentioned above.
Hope that resolves your issue. Will wait for tee rating.
Thanks
Sammy

Folder Options is removed from Tools in Windows by a virus. The virus is called W32.Rontokbro@mm OR W32/Rontokbro.gen@MM
The removal of this virus is slightly difficult. Antivirus can't remove
it automatically. However detailed procedure to remove it is available
at

About this Virus/Worm:
What it does is creating new files which looked like a folder but its
actually a .exe file. Unless you’ve enabled the view extensions in the
folder options or else you won’t see the .exe extension of the file.
The file is approximately 43.7Kb and normally people will click to open
it because it looked like a folder. So after you’ve open it, the virus
will run each time during startup and keep on spreading and spreading…
into the harddrives.
More troubles coming up. Normally when you click “Tools” in explorer,
there’s a “folder options” underneath it. Once the pc is infected with
the virus, the Folder Options will be missing, which disabled you to
change the options to view the extension of the files. So when you see
a new folder appeared from nowhere and you clicked to open it out of
curiousity, the virus spread more again. Moreover, the virus disabled
the registry edit where you will see this message “Registry edit is
disabled by the administrator” everytime you try to edit the registry.
So how to clean the virus then? I found some solution from the following link and have successfully cleaned it from my system.

It will help you to get rid of this virus named W32.Rontokbro@mm aka brontok.a and to get back your hidden files.

Show hidden files
Follow these steps to display hidden files and folders.
Internet Explorer includes a toolbar that allows you to browser the Internet or perform different functions in your browser.
The toolbar allows you to navigate web pages, add browser add-ons such as pop-up blockers, save and print pages and more.
If you are unable to see the toolbar or components you want to use, enable them quickly using these simple steps and guidelines.
Click the Windows "Start" menu and click "Internet Explorer" to launch your web browser.
Click the "Tools" menu located on the top and click "Menu bar" if you want to view the menu bar.
Alternatively, press the "Alt" key to display the File menu.
Click the "View" menu, select "Tool bars" and click the "Menu bar" tool you want to display the menu bar.
If you want to display a different toolbar, select it
hope this helps
To add a toolbar, click Tools, then Toolbars from the Command bar or right-click on the Command bar to see a list of toolbar options. You can activate or deactivate a number of Internet Explorer toolbars from this menu option. You can even Lock the Toolbars to make Internet Explorer 8 show the same toolbars each time you use the browser.
To add or remove Add-ons, click Tools from the Command bar and select Manage Add-ons from the drop-down menu. From this menu you can view and manage a list of different Add-on Types you've got installed in the browser. To add more, click on the Find more providers... option at the bottom of the window. To delete an Add-on, highlight the one you wish to remove and select Remove, or select Disable if you wish to leave it installed but make it inactive.

Thanks for those suggestions but none of them had anything to do with the solution.
Eventually I right-clicked on the border of one of the bars and there was an option to "close new volume toolbar" - magic, that one disappeared. Same with the other one except I didn't not what it was called. They're gone, anyway - still no idea how they were created or "switched on" in the first place.
