After spending quite a while talking to the techies and no solution, my friend said she had the same problem with her phone and she turned it off and then back on ! It worked for me !!!

try to reset your phone back to default by going to your menu then going to settings and tools then to phone settings then down to security type in your password it might be your last 4 of your phone number then to reset default

That chiming you're hearing is because your phone is attempting to download the messages from the server but the text message memory is full. Try clearing out some (or all) or your sent and received messages and it will work just fine.
