How do I unlock GE Profile Stove after oven cleaning cycle

Working on taking the top surface off

  • Donald Langford Feb 08, 2015

I figured it out - I took to top off and then removed three metal covers (one with insulation over it and found that the motor would not turn. One of the plastic gears was worn down so I manually rotated to cam for the two switches to the unlocked position and then I disconnected the motor. The stove works perfect now but the Oven Lock is disabled. A new lock motor assembly which includes the two switches and cost $150 (one switch closed the oven lock is enabled. When the other switch is enabled the Oven is unlocked). The control has to have the unlock switched closed before you can use the oven. If I choose to use the auto Oven clean cycle I will have to do it with the door unlocked. The Question is now closed. The is a major problem with all home Gas Ranges because the oven gets so hot for 4 hours that it

SOURCE: cleaning and care for my GE Profile stovetop

The one thing I don't suggest is using the Ceramabryte product the dealer left with us. It leaves a greasy film. When I get ready to clean my black GE Profile, I pull off the controls to wash separately. Then I lift off the grates, take a single-edge razor blade to scrape anything stuck on (it doesn't scratch), then I use baking soda and scrub and scrub with lots of paper towels. Then I start cleaning off the baking soda with lots and lots more paper towels. There is still a film, but at least it's not greasy. At this point I grab some more dry paper towels, pour on a 3' puddle of rubbing alcohol and wipe it all over the stove top and front. You may have to do this twice. Then, if I don't turn on the hood light's brightest setting, it really doesn't look too bad. I have to do this at least once a week, as I have never had a stove that got so dirty so fast and was such a pain to clean.

FYI, I would never buy another of these stoves. Besides the cleaning issue, there is the fact of having to replace the igniter (glow plug?) twice in the first four years. My old, bottom-of-the line Magic Chef went 25 years with the first replacement not coming until it was about 15 years old. Also, the broiler is unimpressive and steaks, etc., just sort of steam. Can't get a really good crust going. It's a slide-in and the top is very narrow, front to back, because of the slanted control panel on the front, and so you really can't put two large pots or pans on one side. Let's see....oh yes, I ordered the unglazed grates for safety reasons and it came with the procelain glaze. Those were replaced free of charge, though I had to go pick them up. Then the first set of unglazed grates began to rust about six months into use, so had to be replaced (again, no charge at least). Recently I noticed that the inside walls of the oven, where the racks slide, are starting to rust. Finally, the burners are difficult to calibrate, which I really notice when I try to cook rice, which comes out right about 50% of the time.

Now, on top of all this, I have to worry about the glass door exploding?!?! Should I ban my grandchildren from the kitchen? Has anyone from Consumer Reports seen this website?

SOURCE: GE Profile Spectra XL44 oven wouldn't light, stove top and broiler works

We have our second GE stove and it has started to do the same as the rest of you.  Our first stove began to suffer igniter issues after 4 or 5 years.  I called GE and was given a simple test procedure for the igniter using a multimeter that I don't remember and likely wouldn't post regardless lest someone do things incorrectly... In any event, as I understand, the gas flow is tied to the igniter temp.  As the igniter ages, the temp that it can achieve gets lower. Eventually, it hits a point where the temperature isn't sufficient to reliably ignite the gas and our problems start.  The solution is fairly simple.  Replace the igniter. So, call a repair person and tell them the problem.  They can come out and instal the new igniter.  Unless you are a licensed or certified repair person, DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF.  Let the pros handle repair to gas appliances.

SOURCE: GE Profile gas range - stove works, oven doesn't heat

Set the oven for bake. Wait a couple minutes and look in the oven. If you see a orange glow the ignitor is working, but, may need to be replaced.
If you see no orange glow the ignitor definitely needs to be replaced.

GE Profile Stove baking option not working

Possibly the bake igniter, the temperature sensor or the electronic oven clock/control. Does broil mode heat properly or does it run cool also? If broil heats to the proper temperature then the temperature sensor is probably ok. That leaves the ignitor or the controller which takes some more troubleshooting. If it is the controller, we repair them at www.fixyourboard.com.

GE Profile stove not working

If neither bake or broil ignitors work you must first verify voltage to the parts.
Most likely a defective electronic control.
