Connecting a esata port to a sate external hard drive

I don't think there is a converter from USB to ESATA, but you could buy a new Hard Drive enclosure that has those options, but I am not sure if you are willing to take out the HD from the existing one.

Toshiba 160 GB Hard drive is not seen by 'new' computer

I have had a similar problems with external drives that only plug into a USB port (no ext power adapter). It is very common that the power supply fed through the USB port is inadequate to power an external hard drive. Some enclosures have a external A/C input to resolve this. Also, some computers (motherboards) only have a select number of USB ports that are powered. Since this device is detected by your other computer and not on the new one, my next attempt would be to locate a USB hub with external A/C power. There is a good chance that this will resolve the problem. By the way, when you plug in the drive does it spin up?

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.

My computor switches off the moment i plug in the wd passport.

Probably a power issue. Your new computer has less extra power capacity and the external drive is pulling from the USB port power.

What you need is a USB hub with an AC adapter that powers the hub and any devices that are connected to it from the external AC power adapter and NOT from the USB bus. In other words look for an external power adapter that plugs into the wall as well as into the USB port. Don't get a recharger for an iPOD as that will not do you any good. And don't get a hub that says "powered" or "external power" that does not have an AC power adapter because it is still sucking power off of the USB port.

Try shopping for a D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub. It is a good choice if you are not going to plug any USB 1.1 devices into it. Read the reviews for any device you choose.
