Never try to do anything on the display screen, as it will affect the LCD inside. If it is very irksome, go for a change of display.

It will cost more then the cost of a new TV to replace that LCD panel. 55" panel would probably be in the $700-$800 range. Walmart has new 55" LCD's in the $700 range. The TV is not junk, it has some value. Throw it on Ebay or Craigslist as a parts unit. I assure you someone will buy it. I'd ask for at least $100

The only fix is to replace the panel and that would not be cost effective. It would be cheaper to buy a new TV.

It is symptom of weak lamp in tv that need to be replaced.
Replace lamp in your tv to fix this issue. Lamp replacement is easy and would be written in user manual.

Contacted Sony Eletronics and was told it could not be fixed . Sony
offered a great deal to trade in for a much better one : a 55" Sony Bravia valued at $ 2,000 for $ 825 . Not bad !

your lcd has one of this 2 problems.

1. Option
your lcd has only lcd flat cable problem, you must change the lcd cristal.
2. Option has power supply problems

This is not really anything that can be easily or cheaply fixed. This is a MAJOR problem with these tv's - call Sony and drive them crazy... some people have gotten assistance this way.
