The sump pump gasket has been deteriorating and leaving a black residue. Can I remove/replace the gasket from inside the tub or will I need to remove the unit and loosen or remove the pump in order to replace the gasket? Thank you in advance for your advice. Bill K.

It sounds like water isn't being forced through your spray lines, which could be a result of either you trap being clogged or the sump pump not working. It could also mean that your heater element isn't heating the water hot enough for it to clean.
If it only the upper rack then it could be a blockage for the upper sprayer, but if it is throughout the machice, then it would either be the sump pump, trap or heating element as the most likely causes.
This is not as bad as it looks, the Pump motor is more challenging. If your sump needs to be replaced then do the following. Unplug the unit, shut off the water, and remove the racks. Next remove the wash pipe that goes from the sump to up the back and over the top, it just pulls out but be gentle. Next remove all the screws on top of the screen and pull that out. You will see a gasket seal that is either stretched or broken. Next remove the white Pump wheel by turning the screw clockwise (the threads are reversed so it does not unscrew when the pump is running). Now pull up on the grey plastic wash pump housing. You will see the grinding blade that pulls off the wash pump motor shaft. There is your sump. If you need to change the pump you'll have to turn the unit over. Chances are all you'll need to do is really clean out the sump and replace the stretched out seals, available online for about 15.00 or so. Reassemble and start washing. good luck.
normally these pumps don't plug up,it is either the sump in the bottom of the units interior that has food residue plugging it,remove the screen and check in lower sump area,or the hose leading to the housev drain or garbage disposal can be blocked with food sludge,if you still need to remove the pump, you will need to tilt the machine upward to remove the hoses off the pump, but this requires removing the water supply hoses and electrical connection to the unit
? Be careful not to load items so close to the dispenser that the cover will not open to release the detergent. ? The dispenser is not supposed to open when you use the Rinse program. ? Your dishwasher detergent should be fresh and stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Old or caked detergent should be thrown away because it will not dissolve properly and will leave a gritty residue on the dishware. ? Wait until you are ready to start the dishwasher to add the detergent. ? If you are using the Delay program, make sure the dispenser is dry before adding the detergent. ? The detergent compartment only opens in the main wash programs, not the Rinse program.
YOU MAY NEED TO CLEAN THE FILTERS MORE OFTEN IF YOUR AREA HAS HARD WATER This can cause low water pressure. In
hard water areas, it may be necessary to clean chemical buildup from
the filters every 12 to 18 months. To do this, remove the coarse filter
by squeezing the tabs and lifting it out. Next, unscrew the fine
filter and lift it and the main filter out. Wash all three filters
gently in hot, soapy water and rinse them thoroughly.
Your spray arms may be clogging causing low pressure too. Spray-arm
jets and bearings may sometimes become clogged with hard water
chemicals. To remove the spray arms, screw off the nut and take off the
washer on top of the spray arm and lift off the arm. Wash the spray arms
in warm, soapy water. Use a soft brush to clean the jets. Rinse
thoroughly and replace.
Try cleaning the drain pump so it gives
you more water pressure. On occasion something may get through the
filters and into the drain pump. The drain pumps on ASKO dishwashers are
designed to automatically reverse if anything should get caught in the
propellers, thus ejecting the item back into the sump area or down the drain.
Should you need to remove an obstacle from the drain, first turn the
power off then remove the filters . Next, lift
out the small black insert from the sump area. (You might want to
remove any standing water first.) You can then look into the sump area
for the item causing the obstruction. Should you find something, simply scoop it out. Be sure to replace the black insert before you put the filters back in.
You could also try to clean the dishwasher with ' Dishwasher Magic '. This would work like charm :-
Hello Gerry, There are two (2) ways to accomplish this. The easiest is to get some RV anti-freeze (enviromentally safe version) and put that into the bottom of the dishwasher as per the instructions. Then when you return in the Spring, just run an empty rinse cycle to purge the dishwasher of the anti-freeze solution.
The other method will require you to remove (pull out from under the cabinet) the dishwasher and (with power turned off!) disconnect the sump pump boot to drain the residual water out of the unit. In some models, there is a small drain plug that you can remove to drain the water out of the bottom sump (pump) section of the dishwasher.
Good that you thought of this, as many folks forget that leaving water in their appliances in freezing conditions can cause some major headaches from burst pipes, pumps, etc. if they aren't properly winterized for the freezing temperatures they'll get in an unheated building.
That black gunk is caused by soap deposits and food particles that do not get washed down the drain. This all collects in the area around the door gasket and front of the wash tub and forms a sticky black sludge. You need to periodically clean the interior of the dishwasher out with a non-abrasive cleaner with some bleach in it to kill bacteria. You should also check the wash pump sump (located under the lower spray arm) to make sure it is not being clogged with food and debris. In order to access the pump sump, you will need to perform the following:
1. Remove the lower wash rack and lower spray arm.
2. Remove the upper wash rack and spray arm.
3. Locate the screws holding in the upper spray feed tube. Remove the screws to the feed tube and turn the whole assembly 1/4 turn to the right (CW direction). The entire assembly will unlock from the wash pump assembly and lift out.
4. Remove the strainer assembly (known as an accumulator) that covers the pump sump area.
Inspect the sump area for food particles and debris that may be contributing to the mess inside the wash tub. If you need some guidance, pcappliancerepair.com has some very helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you.

clear the line from the air gap to the drain,, if the rest is clear the only thing it can be is the propellers on the pump, i which case you will need to change the pump
It would be real helpful to have you provide the manufacterer and model number to get more specific with solution.
-Have you changes dishwasher soap powder recently? Buy a box of Electrosol or Cascade and see what happens. The ultracheep versions actually have caused cleaning problems, especilly in water-conserving dishwashers.
-Under the lower rack is the sump area with a filter that can be removed, usaully by removing several screws. Pull that filter, rinse is as best you can. Inspect under where the filter was and remove all debris. Watch out for broken glass that is found in most well used diswashers, it is hard to see and sharp! Reasemble the filter.
-If problems continue and if this diswasher is several years old, plan on getting the wash pump motor replaced (or replace the diswasher with a name brand, Energy Star model.) Good Luck!
Please update me with what you found. OK?
I have the same problem on my Bosch dishwasher Model # SHX33A05UC. It is about 6 years old. I have replaced three gaskets and it did not solve the problem. I am a 25 year mechanical engineer. I do not recommend anyone changing these gaskets on their own except for the long dishwasher door gasket (which goes along the top, left and right door edges) which is quite easy to replace. The other two gaskets, which were quite difficult to replace, were the gasket at the bottom of the dishwasher door and the sump pump gasket. I am still having the tar like black tiny dots depositing on my plastic tupper wear on the second shelf. I will likely not buy a Bosch dishwasher ever again. I will make my decision after hearing what Bosch tech support has to say about what I need to replace next. Could it be the rubber drain check valve not operating correctly? I need to find out. I have spent so much time trying to solve this black tar dot problem!!!
