Quite possibly the lens is in need of a clean. It sounds like it is acting a bit like when you see a moon on a night with high cloud, we see a ring around it caused by the atmosphere, much the same as dust on the lens. Hope that helps.
Could be Bad Ballast,or defective cooling Fan, Lamp fan.

If Lamp Fan is not running when lamp trys to come on TV will turn off in order to protect the Lamp
The Ballast Board is what turns the Lamp ON.
when the set shuts down check to see what the error code is, press the input and menu buttons at the same time, hold them down for 10 seconds, the green light should blink a two digit code, if this is 38 then you have a thermal sensor problem and need to call Mitsubishi for extended warranty repair.
