Without knowing your make and model I can only offer general reasons for this to happen. Whether it is a lever on the mower deck or on the body of the tractor, the tensioner is held engaged by spring or belt tension. If it is a spring it can be disconnected, broken, or stretched so the tension is less. This along with belt vibration can disengage it. The belt can be worn or idler pulleys with bad bearings can cause the belt to flop around excessively and cause it to disengage. A new belt or spring may be needed.
