How to connect a laptop to a TV - wired and wireless options

Connect a laptop to a TV with a VGA cable If you have an older laptop and TV, you'll likely find a VGA port on both of them. You can check out what a VGA cable looks like and buy one here. VGA isn't as good as HDMI because of the lower-resolution video quality it provides. It also only deals with the video signal, which means you'll need a separate cable to handle the audio.

Turn on your TV and laptop and then connect them using a VGA cable as well as a 3.5mm audio cable. The next step is to press the Input button on your remote (could also be called Source or AV) and select the PC or RGB option from the list. That's all there is to it.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Connect the laptop to the TV with a VGA cable.
2. Connect the two devices with a 3.5mm audio cable.
3. Turn on both devices.
4. Select the PC or RGB input on the TV with the remote. The connection between the two devices should be established automatically. But in case it doesn't, go to Settings > System > Display and make sure "TV" is selected. You can also adjust the resolution to match the one of your TV. One that's done, press the Windows key and P key and then select the "Duplicate" option.

Connect a laptop to a TV wirelessly
If you don't want to deal with those pesky cables, connecting your laptop to the TV wirelessly is the way to go. But you do need a media streaming device like the Google Chromecast or Roku Streaming Stick Plus to get the job done. An Android TV will also do, as it has Chromecast built-in.

A Google Chromecast device is probably your best option, and although it costs more than something like an HDMI cable, it's not super expensive with its starting price tag of just $35 - get it via below.

To get started, plug the Chromecast into your TV and set it up. I'm not going to explain the setup process in this post, as we have a dedicated article for that - check it out here. Once everything is set up, you can mirror Chrome tabs, your videos and files stored locally on your laptop, and even your desktop to the TV. Just launch the Chrome browser on your laptop, click the menu icon (three vertical dots) in the upper-right corner, and select the "Cast" option. Then just select the content you want to cast via the "Sources" drop-down menu and click on the Chromecast you want to cast it to (if you have more than one).

Step-by-step instructions:
1. Plug the Chromecast into the TV and set it up (click here for instructions).
2. Open the Chrome browser and click the menu icon in the upper-right corner (three vertical dots).
3. Select the content you want to cast via the "Sources" drop-down menu.
4. Select the Chromecast you want to cast to.

How do i watch movie from my tablet on my tv

Depends on the tablet. You can use google chrome cast for lots of media streaming to TV on all tablets but it only works using certain programs. You might have a micro HDMI output on your tablet if it's not an Ipad which you can connect to your television with a micro HDMI to HDMI cable. But, if it's an apple product you can either buy a $40 adapter cable or a $99 Apple TV hat can connect to your ipad wirelessly, but there's no direct way to connect your iPad to a TV right out of the box.

How can I watch my zte phone on my tv?

There are several options available.
If you have Chromecast , you can stream videos over your phone to the TV. The device is $35 USD. Plus you'll need to install the chrome cast app on your phone.

You can also use a Mobile Device USB Micro to HDMI Display MHL Adapter Cable. This also requires a regular HDMI cable.

Good Luck!

Will chromecast work with my dell d830 ?

Hi Michael,

You do not plug Chromecast into your laptop HDMI port, it is a video source, so you need to plug it into an HDMI port on your TV. Your TV is an HDMI target, the view side.

If you can run Chrome browser on your laptop, you can cast from your laptop to your Chromecast device and watch that frame on your TV.

Does that make sense? Have a look at the link below for more info.
Plug In Chromecast

Good luck!

Does anyone know out to connect a chrome cast to a sky router

Hi Peter, not sure what you are trying to do here but the ChromeCast dongle needs to plug into an HDMI port on your TV. It has a microUSB port only for power.

On some routers, there are USB ports for 3G dongles for wireless broadband, or media storage for DLNA or media sharing on your local network.

If you are trying to get eg. Youtube through your router, check this compatibility list:

Hope this helps.
