The plug that connects to my Dell laptop got very hot and now the computer is not recognizing that it is plugged in. The charger's green light is still on, but it does not appear to be recharging the battery. I just bought a new battery a couple of months ago and was wondering if I should try replacing the charger or will it not work? Any suggestions?
Folks.
The issue with most of the Dell charger issues rekated to a new charger not being able to charge the battery is the fact that Dell has a screwy proprietary circuit design in their laptops and chargers.
It seems that the Dell laptops are designed so
only Dell chargers will work. While other
brands of chargers will power the laptop when plugged in,
they will not charge the battery.
They do this so they have a monopoly on their chargers and thus can charge a frickin' fortune for their, Dell chargers.
Want them to change this? don't buy Dell products for a while. If enough people ban them, they would change this **** overnight!
If you get the message for the AC adapter not recogonized this a failure of either the Ac adapter or the motherboard connector. Try another good know AC adapter or try the AC adapter on another Dell laptop. if another Ac adapter works fine then it is an issue with the motherboard. If in warranty contact Dell technical support and they'll do the needful. If it is outside the warranty then a local technician will be the best option as Dell does not repair the motherboard.
If the unit is hot close to the laptop as opposed to the charger itself, it is likely the connector that is mounted to the motherboard is faulty. This will require that the laptop be opened and the charger jack be repaired or replaced. This is NOT a repair that should be attempted by anyone unless you have experience repairing surface mounted components. This is a simple repair for any shop that does this on a regular basis. I normally charge $80 for the repair.

The problem is caused by the damaged identification chip in the charger, the charger actually have nothing wrong and can still provide power to your laptop. However, once the identification chip is damaged, the laptop can not recognize the charger as a dell made charger, so it disable the charging function of the laptop, this is a "feature" of the dell laptop by design.
