There are two ways to print black (grayscale) only. One is through the printer access provided through HP software. The other is through the Windows printer software. Try accessing through MS, such as printing from office or paint and see what the printer options show. Then try it again through another program, such as PDF Adobe, or another program that brings up the HP printer software. Another option is going through the device/printers option in control panel. Press Menu button. Then press the <Left> scroll button and <Cancel> button simultaneously. This will take you to the secondory service menu. Press the menu button and select secondary service. Scroll through the menu item and you will see <Clean belt> option. Select it and press select again. This will clean the belt for you. Do it may be two or three times. This will solve your problem.

On the 2840,one reason why the carousel gets out of alignment is because non HP cartridges were used and they were leaking toner. The leaking toner gets into the carousel gears and causes them to jump a couple of teeth.

If you have a warranty HP will fix the problem under warranty repair. However, if you were using non HP cartridges you will be billed. If your problem is non aligned gears, you won't need parts. The gears will have to be aligned and vacuumed. It doesn't require dismantling the printer.
If you do have to pay, it should only be an hour of labor.

Does it print good? If the printing is good, the carousel isn't out of alignment. Don't fix it if it isn't broke.

first make sure that there is no issue with the black cartridge, but how..?

just print a self test page, using the steps provided in the weblink below... if it printing black color, there is no issue, we follow 2 steps to resolve it..

From the service manual:

If the light printing is on the left side of the page, the carousel might be dislocated.

Solution: Verify that the print-cartridge carousel drive teeth are aligned correctly. If the teeth are aligned correctly, replace the print-cartridge carousel.

Hi Mmgrafde,

Press the Go and Rotate Carousel buttons simultaneously. This will calibrate the printer. See if this works.

Otherwise....Remove all cartridges and drum. Switch off printer. Close the lid. Switch on printer and wait until any churning stops. Insert the drum and close the lid. Wait until any churning stops. Put in one cartridge at a time, closing the lid and wait till it stops churning each time. With the last cartridge put in, it will churning longer (calibrating). Try to print from your computer.

It could also be that the toner could actually have run out for the other colors.

  1. Reinstall print cartridge.
  2. Power cycle device.
  3. If the problem is not solved, replace the cartridge. NOTE: The software CD-ROM that came with the HP Color LaserJet 2820/2830/2840 all-one includes an animated tutorial that shows how to replace the print cartridges.
    1. Remove any media from the ADF, and then push the scanner-release button to open the scanner assembly.
    2. Open the cartridge door.
    3. Make sure that the correct print-cartridge slot is in the access position.
      • If the correct print-cartridge slot is not in the access position, close the top cover and the scanner assembly, and then press ROTATE CAROUSEL until the correct print-cartridge slot is in the correct position. Pinch together the two large blue tabs on the first cartridge, and then lift the cartridge straight up to remove it from the carousel.
    4. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging, remove the orange cover from the print cartridge, and then pull the orange tab straight out to remove the sealing tape.
    5. Squeeze the blue release levers on the print cartridge, holding it with the roller facing you. Lower the cartridge straight down into the carousel until it is firmly in place.
      • To replace another cartridge, close the top cover and the scanner assembly, press ROTATE CAROUSEL , and then repeat the previous steps. NOTE: If a black print cartridge was replaced, then the device prompts to have a cleaning page ran, unless the device page count is less than 100 pages.
    6. Close the top cover, and then close the scanner assembly.

Printing quality off? 2550 HP laser jet?
When installing new cartridges, it's always a great idea to perform a cleaning and recalibration of the machine. Below are the steps needed to do just such a task. You may want to print these out or save them somewhere for future reference as well. They are directly from the HP website.

Cleaning the printer
  1. Verify the printer is turned on and in the Ready state.
  2. Open the HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox. Click Cleaning Page on the Troubleshooting tab, and the click Print (HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500) or Cleaning Page (HP Color LaserJet 2550). A page with a pattern prints from the printer.
  3. Remove any paper that may be in tray 1.
  4. Remove the page that printed and load it face down into tray 1.
  5. At the computer, press Clean .
Calibrating the printer There are two methods of calibrating the printer manual: at the printer or from the Toolbox on the computer. From the printer Turn the printer off and then on again. From the HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500 Toolbox on the computer
  1. Open the HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500 Toolbox in one of the following ways:
    • Double-click the HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500 Toolbox icon on the computer desktop.
    • Select Start , Programs , HP Color LaserJet 2500 , and then HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500 Toolbox to open the Toolbox from the Windows desktop.
  2. Click Diagnostic Tools on the left side of the screen on the Troubleshooting tab.
  3. Click Color Calibration to perform the calibration procedure.
