Canon pixma mp500

The printer is just over 12 months old. I've replacedthe ink cartridges once with the correct Canon cartridges and its worked fine for a few months. But now the printer comes up with the code U150 and the message "the following ink tank cannont be recognized"refering to the magenta cartidge. For a while we could fix it and still print by opening up the top and either removing the cartridge or just clicking it. It would then light up like the rest of the cartridges and the message would go away. Sometimes the message was different and it said that there were two cartridges of the same colour - which there wasn't. But we could still solve it the same way. The print quality was always very good and there seemed to be no other problems.
A week ago it stopped cooperating and now the message (U150) won't go away and the printer will not print. Can you give me any idea of what the problem is?

Very same problem, also with magenta ink.

We have the same problem. States "Two yellow ink cartridges installed."

Have replaced all cartridges several times with new ones and still cannot get the printer to work. U150 error code. Canon has been absolutely no help. They just say to buy a new ink cartridge, but it still won't work !!!!

Rebooted printer; pressed reset button; pressed and held reset button; Pressed Black button; more.

same problem as described but with the black ink cartridges.

I'm having the exact same problem. Bought my MP600 a little less than 4 weeks ago. It's been working like a charm up until about one week ago. Then I started to get the U150 error message - The following ink tank cannot be recognized (it was the yellow tank). I'm using the original tanks that came with the machine.

At first it was enough just to open the top and take out the yellow tank then put it back in again. The light went on, and the printer seemed ok when closing the top. It worked fine until the next time it was turned off and then back on. The U150 appeared again and it went away by following the same procedure as the last time. And so it went on for a couple of days.

But yesterday the error message no longer disappeared by taking the tank out and in again. I tried to replace it with another tank, but the message still wouldn't go away. I've tried several times today, but without any luck. I've also tried to disconnect the printer from the power outlet, taking out all the tanks and putting them back in, clean both the chip on the tank, and the point where it's suppose to connect. Nothing seem to help.

Haven't contacted Canon or the reseller yet, because I always search for answers on the net first.

Same problem here! I'm gonna contact canon support & see what they say. If anybody gets a fix in the meantime--please post it!

My problem is the same as above, just different ink cartridge: The printer is just over 12 months old. I've replacedthe ink cartridges with the correct Canon cartridges and its worked fine for a few months. But now the printer comes up with the code U150 and the message "the following ink tank cannont be recognized"refering to the black # 5 cartidge.
A week ago it stopped cooperating and now the message (U150) won't go away and the printer will not print AND WILL NOT SCAN. Can you give me any idea of what the problem is?

I have the exact same problem. It either tells me I've got two magentas in there, or it doesn't recognise the magenta I put in. It's a brand new cartridge, and it worked fine after I put the cartridge in, just suddenly stopped after a few uses.

I face exactly the same problem!! I managed to fix it for a while, but now the error code U150 blocks tyhe printer again.

I am having same problem with my MP500 it is so frustrating and I have only had it about a year. I purchased only canon replacement cartridges and now i continue to receive the U150 code this cartridge can not be recognized..the black #5 cartridge. There is no fix for this error i believe we have just been had by Canon.

I have the same problem but will Cyan. I bought a new one which didn't work. I took it back and got another one which also doesn't work. Does canon have some major manufacturing problem ?

  • Anonymous May 10, 2008

Same thing here - at first it used to report that there are "several" yellow cartridges inserted - this bug could be fixed by simply reinserting the cartridge twice. Lately the error code is "no cartridges inserted" and it wont work with replacing, resetting or unplugging and restarting the device...I'm lost...

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2009

Same problem, mp530, new printer, new original cartridge, stopped working after about a month giving u150 error.

Very annoying that you cannot override it, you just can't use the device at all (even to scan documents)

Hey- i just wanted to say that I had the same problem with my MP600. Unlike some people, I have a problem buying ripoff cartridges from a store. I use my printer alot and I simply refill these. You can buy any refill kit and especially with these cartridges, drill a hole near the top and just fill it and plug it. The sponge sucks it up and you're all set. As far as the Chip problem-it is a pain in the ass and the **** at Canon probably won't fix it. HOWEVER, if you still want to print and don't mind that your ink counter says that you are empty simply hold the "STOP/RESET" and the "Black" print button together until it clears and you'll be set. I do it all the time and I know it works on the later MPs. Check it out and stick it to the man

For iP Series Printers: Holding the paper feed button down for 3-5 seconds will allow you to override the counter. The cartridge will print , however the ink level display may not show.

For MP Series Printers: Holding the STOP/RESET button down for 3-5 seconds will allow you to override the counter. The cartridge will print, however the ink level display may not show.

I encountered the same problem (U150 Error) with my PGI-BK ink for the first time. I have used my Canon MP500 printer for more than 3 years & never had any issues. I called Canon support & the agent was very helpful. He helped me with few troubleshooting steps, which did not help. But in the end, he said that he is going to ship me a new ink tank as replacement.

BTW, holding the STOP/RESET button does not work on my MP500. How come it worked for 'urbanant' above (see Solution #2). Has anyone else made it work for PIXMA MP500?

My trouble was the same with cyan. Cleaned chip contacts with an eraser. Error remained. Held reset for 10 seconds. Error. Held reset and black for 10 seconds. Error. Opened cover. Print head went across from right to left with three "good" tanks UNLIT and problem tank lit. Then went back to the right and disapeared and then returned to center with all four tanks lit. Printer than printed normally with no error message.???

I called through to the techs, it's a faulty cartridge. They go through this whole lengthy thing to make sure it's nothing else - took me about 15 minutes on the phone, then they mailed me a replacement cartridge, free of charge.

This is apparently something they are dealing with a lot, so call and get your free cartridge replacement.

The problem is due to faulty chip at the bottom of the cartridge. I notice that some chips looked very scratchy, and they are the ones that usually contribute to the u150 problem. Simply buy the canon ink until u get unscratchy chip for each color, and then do not throw away the good chips. If in the future u unfotunately got an ink cartridge that has faulty chip, u can use cutter or knife to pluck out the scratchy chip and use the old unscratchy one that u have kept. However, u will not be able to monitor how much ink is left, but still it is better than having u150 error almost everytime u want to print. Hope this solves the problem

Sometimes it helped me by just unplugging the power. Probably the connection pads to the cartridge are in bad shape, and as soon as one connection is isolated, the printer gets the error message.

I have an error on my canon pixma mp500... it says The type of printhead is incorrect. Install the correct print head. I bought some ink that says that it is compatible for my printer and when I tried it...

i would like to suggest that u should not use any alternate cartridges, plizz buy the originally manufactured ones, else ur printer could get damaged! the reason being that the ink head of some compatible cartridges short circuited very easily compared to the genuine ones, and a fake cartridge could damage ur printer in an instance! so, be careful!

I have canon pixma mp500. The blue ink won't

This is common in Canon Pixma printers (all models). If you are refilling your cartridges or are buying refurbished cartridges this will happen more often. Take the cartridge out and put it back in. If this does not work, then replace the cartridge altogether. If that doesn't work, you need to contact Canon (us.canon.com if you are in the U.S.) for help. Let me know if this helps you.

Canon PIXMA MP500 New Black ink cartridge produces no ink

If you don't use it very often the black could have dried in the printhead, and you will need a new one. Another possibility is that the purge unit is not cleaning and priming the printhead properly. I have seen several defective purge units. For 1 year it can be replaced under warranty, after that it is a $90.00 repair job in the shop.

Canon Pixma MP500 error

ok I figured out what to do. Open the over take out all your ink cartriages. Then flip the print head level on the left hand side up and squeeze the top of the print head (where all your ink sits on) and lift it up. You may want to blow off any dust that may be in there and put the peint head back and replace al your ink put the level down and you should be good to go if not you may have to replace the head.
