You have to remove the plastic cover on the bottom of the ignition column.Where the tumbler goes in you will see a shiny pin that hold the tumbler tooth column.you can drill that pin out carefully and use patience starting with a small bit size and working your way up.don not remove any aluminum material from the column as your new tumbler will not lock in to the column. These cars and columns are plentiful in the junkyard if you are not successful and don't take a lot of time to swap out.
You can't do it; the Theft System it's integrated to the vehicle control computer ECU/PCM; you need install one INTERFACE to make this work.
Review this Wiring Diagram and this comment: when installing a 791 TRANSPONDER BYPASS System on this vehicle it will
be necessary to remove the BOTTOM STEERING COLUMN Cover and IGNITION
SWITCH TUMBLER to gan access to the Factory Transponder System around
the Ignition Switch. To do so will require that you first look at the
bottom of the STEERING COLUMN COVER to identify the screw holes from the
IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER RELEASE PIN HOLE, that is required to remove
the Ignition Switch Tumbler, the IGNITION SWITCH RELEASE PIN HOLE is the
SMALLEST Hole in the plastic cover in this picture. NOTE *** to remove
the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER, a TORX #15 Bit on a Screw Driver will work
just fine. Incert it up into this hole and press, at the same time,
turning the IGNITION SWITCH ON and the Tumbler will pull out at the same
time. This Must be done to remove the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER so that
the BOTTOM Steering Column Cover can be removed to gain access to the
TRANSPONDER SYSTEM built around the IGNITION SWITCH.
It sounds like the classic "switch needs replacing". You only need the tumbler replaced. Before installing the new tumbler take it and your door key to your local locksmith and they can key the new tumbler to work with the old key. This saves you from have to have two different keys.
There is a good possibilty that the key tumbler mechanism "rod" has become disconnected to the door control mechanism. These rod connections are plastic and will break. Also if someone is trying to unlock the door while someone is trying to open the door either from the inside or outside; this could cause this link to break. If someone tried to "jimmy" the lock using a slim-jim they could have caused a disconnection or breakage.
The last of my theories is the locking tumbler could have become loose because of a tumbler spring lock clip that may be broke or malfunctioning. This keeps the tumbler in place while turning the key. If the key continues to turn more than it should or is very loose this could be the problem. However this is rare.
You will have to take the inner door panel off to gain access. Check visually to see if this rod from the key tumbler to the door mechanism is loose on top where it is connected to the key tumbler OR on the bottom of the rod where the rod connects with the door control mechanism.
The "L" part of the rod pushes into the hole of the plastic clip and normally there is an rotating arm clip lock that flips over onto the rod and locks onto the rod, holding the rod in place. If the clip has broken it should be replaced (available to auto part stores).

it sounds like a problem with the tumbler, my sierra has done this before, next tim it does this dont try the fuses, just turn the key to the off position and give er a whack on the underdied of the column right under the key area. some trucke for what ever reason have i loose accessory wire right where they meet the tumbler exchange.
look at the steering column below the ign lock and tumbler there should be a small hole turn key to on pos and push a small rod up the holethis then should release the lock and tumbler,no hole then wheel and coumn has to be stripped to get to lock retainer
