Hi
You need to get into Printer Preferences, where you can select black/grayscale from the Print Options list. Following this link:
https://files.support.epson.com/pdf/xp400_/xp400_ug.pdf
will take you directly to a manual in pdf format which you can save to your computer for future reference. The section you want starts on page 49 and on page 50, there is a screen shot of the properties you need to get to on the computer, to put a tick in the "Black/Grayscale" box.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

Why can't I print in black ink only....that's what they said you could do.

On your printer properties.....go to start, printers, in the window, right click on the printer, in the window, click on printer preferences, look for the color tab, then click on print in grayscale selection. You will then print everything in black only. You can do this for everything you print, or by selecting printer preferences in the print window after you have selected print for a document, you can then go to the color tab and click on print in grayscale for that individual document.

I hope you find this information helpful in solving your problem. If so, please leave positive feedback.

Thank you,

Brian

The black cartridge (Brother LC51) doesn't print on my Brother MFC 685CW. The other 3 cartridges print just fine and passed the Print Quality Check. Running clean cycle doesn't help

In order to print in Black and White using grayscale, you will need to adjust the printing preferences within the driver. To change the printer properties complete the following steps:

1. Open the Printers Folder:

  • Windows 2000: Click Start => Settings => Printers.

  • Windows XP: Click Start => Printers and Faxes.

  • Windows Vista: Click the Start button => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Printers.

  • Windows 7: Click the Start button => Devices and Printers.

2. Right click on the Brother printer driver and left click Printing Preferences.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Select Grayscale.

5. Click APPLY => OK. Your printer will now print in grayscale.

I have an HP deskjet 5650 and just changed both black and color cartridges. Test sheet ran fine with color and black. Now I am trying to print a Print Shop color document and the printer will only print...

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Printers
Select your printer
Right-mouse click on the icon
Click Properties
Set the printer to print in "colour", not just "black".

Can I print black and white only

May be able to tell it to print in gray scale only.

Go to 'control panel' / printers/ your hp printer
then printer / properties / advanced tab / printing defaults / click on 'print in grayscale only'.
Then the printer may need the 'ok' button pressed to proceed.
After that it depends on how pendantic the printer is but it should proceed

Will not print in Black

Check the Print in Grayscale setting If the self test page printed Black, the ink cartridges are okay, and the ink levels are well above empty, the printer software has probably been set to print in color. Follow the steps below to check this setting:
  1. In the software application you are trying to print from, click File , then Print . The Print dialog opens.
  2. Make sure your printer is selected, then click Preferences . The printer Preferences dialog opens.
  3. Select the Color tab, then make sure that Print in grayscale is selected.
  4. Try the print job to see if this step resolved the issue.
And also follow the steps given below to change the setting in printers and faxes preferences.
  1. Click on Start, Open Control panel
  2. Double-click on printer and faxes
  3. Right-click on printer Icon and select properties or preferences.
  4. Now in preferences box check whether printing in black is enabled.
Now try to print a document from Word.

Black ink only

Print using pigment black ink only (Windows) Instructionsto print using only the pigment black ink tank only. Occasionally youmay need to print using black ink only. Using grayscale alone does notprovide this option and the color inks will still be used. By followingthis procedure you may print using only the pigment black ink tank. Note: Image quality may be sacrificed when printing photographs.
  1. Open the Properties / Preferences window for the printer.

    For Windows Vista
    • Click/ Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'ControlPanel', 'Hardware and Sound', and then click on 'Printers'. Note: If you are in 'Classic' view, Click 'Printers' directly from the 'Control Panel'.
    • Clickyour right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and thenselect 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.
    For Windows XP Home Edition
    • Click/ Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'ControlPanel,' 'Printers and Other Hardware,' and 'Printers and Faxes.'
    • Clickyour right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and thenselect 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

    For Windows XP Professional Edition
    • Click 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Printers and Faxes.'
    • Clickyour right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and thenselect 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

    For Windows 2000/Me/98
    • Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Settings,' then 'Printers.'
    • Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.

  2. Click on the Main tab.

  3. Select 'Plain Paper' as the Media Type. If any other paper type is selected, color ink will be used to create black.

    win_main_plain_paper.jpg

Note: The pigment black ink will only be used when printing on plain paper.

  4. Select the box for 'Grayscale Printing'. If the document to be printed is in black only, then this step may be skipped.

    win_main_grayscale_print.jpg

Note: If either 'Borderless Printing' or 'Duplex Printing' are enabled from the Page Setup tab, grayscale will be created using a combination of the color (dye) inks to prevent smearing.

  5. Click 'OK' to save the changes.
The printer will now only use the pigment black ink tank.

Can I set default printing to black and white for color laser printer?

Yes. Any printer's default options can be set as desired. Open the printer's properties (Start/Control Panel/Printers/right click the printer and left click Properties), and change the setting as you wish, then click OK. Those settings should be used each time you use the print command, unless you change the settings for that particular print job.

Hope this helps, and please rate my advice, good OR bad.

Good luck!

Sharp AR-M237 Grayscale Copier Problem

Yes.There should be settings to enhance that in your print driver properties page.
Easiest way to access that is to open a document and click "file' then 'print and that will bring up your printer options.
Look around the print driver for ways to enhance your prints.
Most drivers have several options in graphics areas to make adjustments.
You can access printers from the controle panel and also right click the printer and select properties to access it.
There definatly are ways to adjust that.
Hope this helps you some.

It's one of two problems, either the nozzles in the cartridge are clogged or your printing preferences are set to "print in grayscale." To clear the nozzles try running the printer through a "deep cleaning" cycle from the printer's maintenance screen (available from the printer's properties). To check the printing preferences go to the printer's properties, as well, from Start > Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > right-click on the printer and choose Printing Preferences. Make sure to uncheck "Print In Grayscale."
