I have an Amana PTAC ac 15000 BTU that has stopped, the power cord keeps tripping. I removed the power cord and plugged it in to the socket and the breaker did not trip, any clues. I'm thinking of just getting a new unit, it is 10 years old and has never been serviced.

I think you've gotton your moneys worth with ten trouble free years. The power cords safety device is a bit more sensitive to a high resistive short to ground than your breaker is. I would suggest that there is exactly that: a high resistive short to ground within the cabinet of the PTAC. It has been years since I have been on a PTAC call and am unable to suggest specifics. But if you are competent and capable of using a DVOM, open up the unit and begin a systematic approach of determining the problem.

The FIRST thing I'd do is check the motor and the compressor with a digital megohmeter. Sometimes their problem will only show up with this sensitive device.

Thanks very good advice, I'm going to check it when I return home, but I think my wife agrees ten years is a good run and time to replace.

SOURCE: Trips circuit breaker

If the unit is new then the unit may be over-sized for the electrical circuit. If the unit is not new then the compressor may be failing

This a ground fault breaker. They do go bad. Is it kicking it all the time or when you plug it in. I replaced a lot of the ground fault plugs. You have to go to the Appliance Parts store to get a new power cord. If you have a problem with thisyour warranty should cover the power cord check your warranty. Rus

To all friends! Whenever you find breaker tripped or fuse blown, it's an indication some device/s are in problem.
To get tripped breaker:
1. Condenser too dusty- clean it.2. Fan motor or compressor grounded-Replace. 3. Compressor high amps due to capacitor weak-replace capacitor. 4. Burnt wire-rectify. 5.Short circuit-rectify.

Check the wall plug - there's a possibility the wall socket is either worn or the wiring to the socket isn't tight. The socket will need to be removed to check this, so make sure the power is off first.
