No, it's a matter of the decoder. The Windows don't want to pay for the license of Blu-ray, and as a result, you are not able to play DVD or Blu-ray in Windows Media Player. But don't worry, you can make use of some free open source player to play DVD in Windows.

Now the situation for the Windows users becomes that, when they upgrade the Windows system from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or something, they may encounter the problem that indicates Windows Media Player won't play DVD. This is because Windows has dropped its support to provide Windows Media Player's built-in DVD codec for Windows 10 and above. To a large extent, Microsoft sees that the market is decreasing needs for a DVD drive, not to mention DVD playback service. They take it for granted that not many users may spend extra money for DVD playback since users could easily watch movies from the internet. You can try Leawo Blu-ray Player to play DVD.

Windows XP does not come with the proper software to play DVDs. All major brands of pcs come with a piece of software called a DVD decoder. Once the DVD decoder is installed windows media player can play DVDs again. This software will be on your application recovery disks from your manufacturer. If you do not have these disks you can purchase them from the company who built your PC or you can purchase a DVD decoder software such as the ones found here. If you don't want to purchase one you can try a different program such as the VLC Media player to play your DVDs. VLC is a free download.

My media player want play dvd's

Maybe your screen resolution needs to be higher? What type of error message are you getting? Are these dvd's that you were able to play before?

Most computers will have problems playing dvd's that someone made for you on their computer. Try a store purchased dvd and see if it plays.

You can always reinstall windows media player at Microsoft's site below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player

You can also try the VLC Player. It comes with drivers and codec. I've seen it solve a lot of issues that Media Player could not fix.

Try using VLC as your player. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "download vlc" (without the quotes). Look for the Video Lan download from site www.videolan.org/vlc Download and install it. It downloads and installs in 3 minutes or so. It's a very fast player, smooth and it can play just about any type of dvd formats and media. It's totally FREE.
