I tried using different new needles and screwing the screw as tight as I could while I held it in the right alignment.
First of all, check to see that you have the needle facing the proper way. Usually, not always, but usually, the flat side goes towards the back. Be sure the screw that holds the needle in is as loose as it can be without falling out. Then, place your needle into the holder and wiggle it a lot while pushing it up. It can go pretty far up, and it sounds like you just don't have it in all the way. Once you are sure you have it in, tighten the screw that holds it, securely. Use the screw driver, but don't tighten it so tight you can't get it off again. That should do it for you. Also, make sure your needle isn't bent. Good luck, and be sure to wiggle that needle while pushing it up into the holder:)
If you are pulling the arm towards you or pushing away from you then you will need to have the needle arm adjusted. Pushing and pulling of the arm will only cause damage. Many times this needs to be adjusted due to the constant movement of the machine. There is usually material on the Youtube to explain how to adjust needle arm.
