Have a B&S VOX 6500 industrial generator with Honda motor. Generation quit and no breakers flipped. voltmeter shows 3.4 volts on both legs when running. What happened? and how do I fix?

Just tested while running with voltmeter. Tested the unit I was charging and found the ground wire was not attached.

It may be just as simple as flashing the fields. Remove the end cap of the generator. Look for the brush holder on the top center of the housing The brushes may be worn out or the fields may have lost the residual magnetism. The brush holder has two wires going to it, a red (positive) and a ?white (negative). Hook a couple of wires to a 12 volts battery. Plug a lamp into the generator that will light up when it begins to charge. BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!! Start the generator and momentarily connect the two wires to the brush holder connections. Make sure you observe the polarity Two or three seconds is plenty. If this doesn't work remove the brush holder and check brushes.

Our brand new Dometic ac unit or blower does not turn on. I flipped the breaker even though it wasn't tripped. The wires inside the inside the vent in the ceiling are all plugged in. What now?

It sounds like your Dometic unit is not getting power despite the breaker being on. Unless the Dometic unit has an internal fuse to check, I would get out a volt/ohm meter and check to see:
1. Is there power coming out of the breaker that goes to the ac unit?
2. Is there power at the terminals of the ac unit? (You can sometimes remove a ceiling cover to access the contacts on the on off switch.

Lastly is your RV hooked up to full power with two 110 volts on both legs beside the neutral and ground wire? If you are only feeding your RV with a standard 110 volt extension cord and using an adapter, that can mean half the circuits in your RV are energized while the other half 110 volt leg is not. You must energize the second leg by using a full 30 amp or 50 amp dual power cord.

RV's are funny. They require two 110 volt legs with a neutral and a ground. The two 110 volt legs are both of the same phase. There is no 220 volts between the two hot legs as they are in phase. A volt meter between the when hot would read zero volts, while each hot leg to neutral would read 110 volts.

Hope this helps.

No power generation

The reasons of no power generation:
1. The voltmeter of the control panel is damaged or the wiring is in poor contact. This situation is generally after the diesel generator starts normally, and the voltage on the meter sometimes does not move. It is necessary to use a multimeter to measure the U, V, W, N phases of the motor, and the phases between U, V, and W. The voltage is about 400v, and the voltage between single-phase U, V, W and N is about 230v.

2. The air switch on the electric ball in the diesel generator is damaged: the phenomenon that occurs is that the diesel generator is normal when it is started, and it trips when the load is turned on.

3. Brushed motor equipped with diesel generator: The disadvantage of brushed motor is that demagnetization occurs occasionally, so it is necessary to keep 1-2 pairs of carbon brushes to prevent this situation.

4. The starting elements are not reached: the starting elements of diesel generators refer to the speed of 1500 rpm, frequency of 50HZ, and voltage of 400v. Many users feel that the noise of diesel generators will be very large when this data value is reached, so they reduce the speed by themselves. , the consequence is that the voltage is not enough, the frequency is not enough, and the power is not generated. After a long time, the power of the diesel generator will be insufficient.

5. Damage to the voltage regulating plate: The function of the voltage regulating plate is to adjust the excitation current correspondingly according to the change of the generator load, so as to maintain the terminal voltage as a given value, which can obviously smell the smell of burning.

The above are the common reasons for the failure of diesel generators to generate electricity summarized by our editor. We hereby suggest that if your diesel generator has not expired, please contact the diesel generator manufacturer to provide guidance on operation, and try not to repair it yourself.

Gew9200LW duet dryer

If this is a 220 VAC dryer use a voltmeter at the wall plug. Chcking from common, usually the leg with the angled blade, to each of the hot legs, each with the straight blade. You need to have 110 VAC in both of these. If there is only 110 at one of the legs the motor will run but the element will not heat. If you find only one leg has 110 VAC try a new circuit breaker in the breaker box. If the breaker is bad it will appear to reset, but still not send current. If you have 110 on both legs check in the dryer for a burned off wire at the timer or element.

My oven 240 volt outlet plug is showing 120 volt on one of the power legs when the 40 amp switch is switched off. We keep burning out oven parts. We replace the 40 amp switch and are seeing the same thing....

First confirm that you have current available on the 120 leg by trying a lightbulb (use the ground leg for your neutral). A meter can show 120V even if there is just a slight leakage, but no current available. If the bulb lights (with the two-pole breaker off) then you have a wiring error. Find our which other breaker is supplying that 120V through a process of elimination. You might also confirm that the 40A breaker actually does turn of both legs by checking the output lugs of that breaker with your meter. Put one lead on a lug and the other lead on the neutral. Repeat for the other lug. Good luck!

I have a briggs and stratton 8500/5500 generator which I am using to power an air conditioner on a camper trailer. I just recently started having a problem where the one circuit breaker keeps tripping when...

Hello, First figure out what the load per leg is on your generator. Are you using the 240 Volts because this is two 120 AC volts legs and they are 120 degrees out of phase with each other.

You will need to figure what the power factor is for each phase on this generator. To figure the power/wattage by using ohm's law. Voltage times Current will give you Watts. Example: If the generator is generator 240 volts the maximum current available is about 23 amps. The maximum current for 120 volts will 46 amps. Therefore, the maximum current per 120 volt circuit is 23 amps for one circuit and 23 amps for the second 120 circuit..

I would try replacing the circuit breaker with the same amperage breaker. Also, watch what the generator load is per circuit. You can install current meter for each circuit. This will give a good indication of which circuit is pulling more load than the other circuit. GB...stewbison

The power is out because of Hurricane Gustav. I have a 6500 watt portable generator and would like to use our clothes dryer which has a 220 volt requirement. Is that possible, and is there a special...

Dryers require a 40A circuit breaker to handle the current. According to Ohms Law: Watts = Volts * Amps. Therefore, you require a power capacity of 220V * 40A in order to safely run the dryer, which is 8800 Watts. This means your generator does not have enough capacity to run the dryer. If we consider the full power of your generator at 6500 Watts, this only allows for 29.5A, which is not enough to run your dryer.

If it WAS possible, you would need to ensure that you ran a 30A heavy extension cord with the correct 220V plugs and receptacles on the end. This would require at least 10gauge 3-conductor wire, which is quite expensive.

However, that point is moot, since your generator does not have the capacity to run your dryer. You could try it, but I rather suspect that the dryer will trip the 30A breaker on the genset circuit. If you do try it, make sure you run a 10-gauge, 30A extension cord or you could have a fire.
