I've currently got a "mini box" only to catch the news and weather. I also have an apple tv. Seems this mini box is causing the picture to be poor. I want the higher quality but don't want to pay for the high priced HD box they say I need with a higher amount of channels. I just wondered... any fix?

This is a software issue with both the TV manufacture and the cable box provider. This will only be fixed when the cable company and TV manufacture sit down and work out their problem. Some cable company has taken the first step by updating cable boxes with different software.

SOURCE: Sony BRAVIA KDL-40S2000 40 in changing from HD to digital channels
40X2000, both PS3 and DVD player are using a HDMI input and both flicker and loose signal fully, have to turn TV of then back on to get signal back. Sony say they have never heard this problem and replaced board. NOTHING fixed, still same problem.
SOURCE: TV not finding Digital Channels from Cable Box
We have Comcast and we plugged the cable straight into our Bravia, searched for Digital Channels and it found 131. We actually get all the HD channels that we had using the box, plus a few more. It's worth a try.
SOURCE: Bravia & Sky+HD, aspect problem
There is nothing wrong with you Sony Bravia TV and it suppport all HD and SD formats.
Are you viewing the HD version of the channel when it is showing a standard defination show. e.g SKY1 HD instead of SKY1.
This means that regular standard defination shows are in a 4:3 ratio and does not fill the whole screen. In order to view these type of shows you will need to tune to regular channel instead of the HD version.
You can check if a show is brocast in HD by going into the tv guide and checking for the HD symbol in the programme symposis.
