SOURCE: Door will not open. Button release does not release the door latches.

The plastic lever release is more than likely broken. You can order the part from
http://www.repairclinic.com/Appliance-Parts?s=t-KCMS145JSS0-%3d%3dc226g5
It's about twenty dollars.

SOURCE: How do you get the front panel off to replace the door release latch

You will need a T20 x 100mm Torx Wrench to remove the 4-5 security screws that hold the top "hood" on the microwave unit. I could not find the wrench at Home Depot or Lowe's but it was available at Harbor Freight tools. Its also found easily on the Internet. Its about $10 for a set of 5-10 different sizes.

After removing the screw, and removing the hood, the rest is pretty simple. The left side (looking from the rear of the unit) will be completely exposed now. Be careful not to touch the Magnetron, Transformer, and other wiring to the unit as everything is on this left side.

You will have to unscrew one screw on the top of the control panel that attaches it to the main unit. Once that screw is off, you have to carefully disconnect 3 electrical connectors on the circuit board, then you just have to pull the control board up and out, as there are a couple of latches on the bottom that hooks it onto the frame.

I'm unable to open the microwave door on model Sanyo EM-S8586W as it appears the spring is broken. How do I remove the cover so I can replace the spring please?

make this steps and fix it. God bless you

  1. Open leverCheck your microwave lever to determine if it is damaged. If it is broken, simply replace the lever to get your microwave door fully functional again.
  2. Door springResponsible for keeping downward pressure on the door hook, the microwave door spring can begin to malfunction. If this part is broken and prevents you from opening your microwave door, replacement is necessary.
  3. Door latchOne reason your microwave door may not open properly is a broken door latch. Located inside the microwave, the door latch manipulates the door hook to keep the door closed for safety and top performance. If broken, the door could become stuck in the locked position.
  4. Door hookIf your microwave door will not release properly, the door hook could be damaged. Located inside the door, the door hook is made of plastic and prone to breakage with extended use or age. As this part is unable to be repaired, the only option is to replace it.
  5. Button or button springIf the microwave door will not open, it could be an internal failure of the button or button spring. If it is determined that either of these parts is the source, both are replaceable and it is recommended that they be installed at the same time.
  6. Handle actuatorIf the microwave door will not open the plastic handle actuator could be broken. Connected between the door button and the door latch assembly, this plastic part could become damaged and brittle over time, which makes breaking inevitable. If this occurs, replace the handle actuator to get your microwave fully functional again.

KitchenAid KCMS145J Microwave Door Latch Broke

I downloaded a parts schematic of the door latch assembly and thought I would determine the broken part, order a replacement and install same. As soon as I started to remove the shell of the unit to get at the latch assembly, I discovered non-standard fasteners are used. My wife advised me to stop and take it to a service center because she did not want me to mess up the containment of the radiation! Thanks for your interest. MB

I have the same latch problem that you really thoroughly described the problem and resources back in 2006.  It was in KCMS145J 1100 Watts Microwave Oven >Troubleshooting My problem is that I have removed...

I wouldn't trust the super glue, especially if it's a nylon part.

I would use epoxy, but you may not have enough room to slather it on without getting it in the pivot hole, etc.

A new latch (release lever) may very well be needed.

Good luck.
