Tried to remove plastic drain valve with wrench. Valve and valve stem turned and turned but does not advance outwards. Want to replace drain valve with ball valve but can't get old valve out.
Chisel out with big screwdriver and/or 7/8" hole saw.
Best way to force purchase of new heater is by replacing drain valve.

Yes if you can pull on the drain valve while unscrewing. Another technique I used once was a jig saw... and carefully cut through the plastic without going as deep as the tanki threads. I made 3 cuts and then used hammer and screwdriver to gently pry out the pieces. Then used piece of 3/4" galv pipe to help re-thread the opening. Use 6 wraps teflon tape on threads of new drain valve.

The "sacrificial rod" is actually there to prevent the heating elements from being eaten away. by electrolysis. If the deposits in the bottom of the tank are simply from sediment from your water, the tank may be fine. You won't know though until you get the tank drained and inspect the elements. The drain valve screws in just like any other piece of pipe if that helps you get it drained, or a piece of wire through the valve may work but you might damage the rubber washer in the valve. Once drained, and the element removed, inspect the element. There should not be any fissures in the element if you have an otherwise healthy tank. visible blowout usually means the rod has failed.
The presence of heavy deposits indicates hard water, which results in shortened tank life.

If your water heater is 10 years old or more, it's much better to replace the entire thing before you start having additional problems with it. You MAY be able to drain your water heater and replace the valve with something more reliable, but, as I've said... if your water heater is old, this is just the 1st thing to go wrong. Check the relief valve,drain and element's,water lines to make sure that they are not the source of the leak. If the tank is leaking you may be able to fix it for now.
The tank depending on condition of the tank if it is pretty sound. Clean up the area of the hole with sand paper. Go to any hardware store and get a JB Weld two part kit. Think I am going to try to wedge between the nut on the drain stem and the tank casing while unscrewing with the wrench. It has started to leak, think the plastic threads are stripped and needs help moving in an outward direction while unscrewing. The new heating element works great, anyway.
