Little Giant Sump Pump Backup System Alarm Keeps Screeching

Have a little Giant Sump Pump Backup System (SPBS-12). Been working fine for years, all of a sudden the Alarm keeps going off. If I hit the reset button, it stays off for a minute or so and then starts screeching again. The battery charge indicator LED on the charger is green (charged). The battery itself has a charge indicator and it is also green (70-100% of full charge). I have checked that there is power to the outlet. If the battery is OK and there isn't a power issue, what else could be causing the Alarm to go off?

There is water. Remember, The Little Giant Pump is just a secondary backup system. The separate primary pump is working and pumping out the water as it usually does. the Little Giant pump will only get called into action if there is a power failure.

PROBLEM SOLVED. My original diagnosis was incorrect.

Turns out the main pump was not working properly, even though it appeared to be. So the alarm was just what it's supposed to do - let you know when you are working on the backup pump. Seems the plastic top casing to the main pump broke, right where the lever arm is, so when the lever arm was pushed up by the float, it wasn't making proper contact and turning on the pump. I was able to order a replacement top casing, install it and all is fine.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to try to help!

What does the alarm indicate - that the pump is not working, that the battery is not charged? First thing I would do is make sure the pump is operational. Shut down the primary pump and see if the back- up pump is working.

Hi! After a power outage my Little Giant SPBS-12 backup system sounded an alarm that wouldn't quit even after power was restored (it was only off for an hour). When unplugged the louder and more...

What is the age of the unit? Those batteries don't last forever and are constantly under a small charge. When the outage happened the battery discharged and the sensing circuit was able to tell that the battery was no longer any good.

My new Little Giant 8-CBA Pump is hooked up underwater and plugged in. Not a sound. Electricity is working. And it's the same pump we have had for the last 7 years.

You say it's new? On some pumps they will secure the float switch when shipping. Be sure you followed directions and removed anything that may interfere with the switch.

Sump pump

The big cylindrical thing at the end of the wire hanging is the switch. I believe it is a mercury switch. Try hitting this a little and see if it stops. Sometimes they get stuck. If this doesn't help, then replace that piece. Hope this helps.

Little Giant stopped working; makes hum noise but wont push wate

Can you take it out of where it is and clean it with vinegar? There may be calcium built up in it. I have one also on my aquarium and when I turn it off sometimes it won't start back up, just humms.. That tells me it's time to clean it.

Little giant pump stopped working

Hi Tom (and Lindsay?),

Ok lets get a little more info,
  1. Plugged in? (Have to ask)
  2. Does it run and not pump?
  3. Does not run?
  4. Tried moving the float switch?
  5. Pull the pump and see if the intakes are clogged
Please comment back with your findings
