Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Relieve the fuel pressure
Remove the rear seat cushion.
Remove the plastic grommet from the floor pan.
Detach the fuel pump electrical harness.
Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump by compressing the tabs on both sides of each nylon push connect fitting and easing the fuel line off of the fuel pump.
Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
Remove the muffler mount.
Remove the heat shields.
Remove the fuel tank cover.
Remove the drain plug and drain the gasoline into a approved container.
Disconnect the fuel lines and remove the fuel filter and base.
Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe clamp at the fuel tank.
Support the fuel tank using a hydraulic jack and a block of wood or other suitable device.
Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts and position the straps out of the way.
Partially lower the fuel tank to access the fuel tank filler pipe vent tube and disconnect the vent tube and filler pipe from the tank.
Disconnect the fuel vapor tube from the tank.
Lower the tank from the vehicle.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Removal
WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable vapors are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

1. Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
2. Loosen the right-hand rear wheel nuts.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the wheel.
5. Remove the fender splash shield.
6. Remove the fuel tank.
7. Partially lower the rear suspension crossmember.
8. Disconnect the fuel vapor tube from the fuel filler pipe.
9. Cut the cable ties.
10. Detach the tube from the clips.
11. Disconnect the vapor tube.
12. Remove the fuel filler pipe lower bolt.
13. Remove the fuel filler pipe center bolt.
14. Disconnect the fuel filler pipe ground cable.
15. Remove the fuel filler pipe.

Reverse to re-install.

It's inside the fuel tank. Access is on top. Remove tank. 2 straps hold it in place.

Removal

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as described under Fuel System Pressure Relief.
   

1. Drain fuel from the fuel tank as described.
   

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
   

1. Remove the exhaust system as required. Refer to Section 09-00.
   

1. NOTE: The connections for the rear fuel supply return and vapor tube (9S278) to the fuel pump module are on top of the fuel tank and are inaccessible. They must be disconnected with the fuel tank partially lowered from the vehicle.
   
   Disconnect fuel tank to filler pipe hose (9047) and vent hoses connecting the fuel tank filler pipe (9034) to fuel tank. Disconnect one end of the vapor crossover hose at the rear over the driveshaft (4602).
   

1. Place a safety support under the fuel tank. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank support straps (9092). Take care not to deform the fuel tank or fuel tank support straps. Fuel tank capacity and/or fuel pick-up may be adversely affected.
   

1. Partially remove the fuel tank and disconnect the rear fuel supply return and vapor tubes at push connect fittings using Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set T90T-9550-S. Disconnect electrical connector from the fuel pump module.
   

1. Remove fuel tank from the vehicle.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and relieve the fuel system pressure.
   
2. Siphon or pump as much fuel as possible out through the fuel filler pipe.
   

NOTE

All vehicles have reservoirs inside the fuel tank to maintain fuel near the fuel pickup during cornering and under low fuel operating conditions. These reservoirs could block siphon tubes or hoses from reaching the bottom of the fuel tank. Repeated attempts using different hose orientations can overcome this obstacle.

1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
   
2. Remove the exhaust pipe and exhaust shield, if equipped. Disconnect the fuel fill and vent hoses connecting the filler pipe to the tank. Disconnect one end of the vapor crossover hose at the rear over the driveshaft.
   
3. If equipped with a metal retainer that fastens the filler pipe to the fuel tank, remove the screw attaching the retainer to the fuel tank flange.
   
4. Disconnect the fuel lines and the electrical connector to the fuel tank sending unit. On some vehicles, these are inaccessible on top of the tank. In these cases they must be disconnected with the tank partially removed.
   
5. Place a safety support under the fuel tank and remove the bolts from the fuel tank straps. Allow the straps to swing out of the way. Be careful not to deform the fuel tank.
   
6. Partially remove the tank and disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector from the sending unit, if required.
   
7. Remove the tank from the vehicle.
   

To install:

1. Raise the fuel tank into position in the vehicle. Connect the fuel lines and sending unit electrical connector if it is necessary to connect them before the tank is in the final installed position.
   
2. Lubricate the fuel filler pipe with water base tire mounting lubricant and install the tank onto the filler pipe, then bring the tank into final position. Be careful not to deform the tank.
   
3. Bring the fuel tank straps around the tank and start the retaining nut or bolt. Align the tank with the straps. If equipped, make sure the fuel tank shields are installed with the straps and are positioned correctly on the tank. Align the tank with the driveshaft.
   
4. Check the hoses and wiring mounted on the tank top to make sure they are correctly routed and will not be pinched between the tank and body. Make sure the fuel vent hose is positioned above the vent retainer and not contacting the driveshaft.
   
5. Tighten the fuel tank strap retaining nuts or bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (29-41 Nm).
   
6. If not already connected, connect the fuel hoses and lines which were disconnected. Make sure the fuel supply, fuel return, if present, and vapor vent connections are made correctly. If not already connected, connect the sending unit electrical connector.
   
7. Install the exhaust pipe shield, if equipped, and exhaust pipe.
   
8. Lower the vehicle. Replace the fuel that was drained from the tank. Check all connections for leaks.
   

Tank Assembly REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section.
3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
4. Use a suitable hand operated pump device to drain the fuel through the filler tube into an approved container. CAUTION
   Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around gasoline. Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area. Never drain or store fuel in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.
   
5. Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack.
6. Remove the 2 bolts securing the fuel tank straps, then swing the straps out of the way.
7. Lower the fuel tank enough to disconnect the vapor hose from the fuel sender assembly and the vapor hose from the vapor pipe at the rear of the fuel tank.
8. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel sender assembly and remove the two retaining clips. If equipped, disconnect the ground strap.
9. Disconnect the fuel filler and vent hoses from the fuel tank.
10. Remove the tank from the vehicle, slowly to ensure all connections and hoses have been disconnected. To install:
    
11. Clean all parts well. Inspect the tank for dents, rust or other damage. On high-mileage vehicles, it may be good practice to remove the fuel pump module and replace the flexible strainer on the fuel pump.
12. Position the fuel tank under the vehicle and raise the tank with a suitable jack.
13. Connect the fuel feed and return lines to the sender assembly.
14. Attach the electrical connector to the fuel sender assembly. If equipped, connect the ground strap.
15. Raise the tank into position into the vehicle and swing the mounting straps under the tank.
16. Install the front fuel tank strap mounting bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
17. Remove the jack.
18. Connect the fuel filler and vent hoses to the tank.
19. Carefully lower the vehicle, then refill the fuel system
20. Connect the negative battery cable, then install the fuel filler cap, if not done already.
21. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, then ON and check for fuel leaks.

1989–94 Vehicles

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section.
3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. CAUTION
   Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around gasoline. Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area. Never drain or store fuel in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.
   
4. Use a suitable hand operated pump device to drain the fuel through the filler tube into an approved container. NOTE: Before disconnecting any fuel lines from the fuel tank, thoroughly clean around all hose connections.
   
5. Disconnect the fuel filler vent hose from the fuel tank.
6. Detach the fuel filler hose from the fuel filler inlet tube on the fuel tank. Position the hose out of the way.
7. Disconnect the vapor hose from the front of the fuel tank.
8. Detach the fuel return pipe and position the hose out of the way.
9. Disconnect the two rear rubber exhaust hangers from the rear of the exhaust system and allow the exhaust system to hang down slightly.
10. Unfasten the exhaust shield mounting bolts, then remove the exhaust shield.
11. Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack.
12. Remove the two bolts securing the fuel tank straps, then swing the straps out of the way.
13. Lower the fuel tank enough to disconnect the vapor hose from the fuel sender assembly and the vapor hose from the vapor pipe at the rear of the fuel tank.
14. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel sender assembly and remove the two retaining clips.
15. Remove the tank from the vehicle, slowly to ensure all connections and hoses have been disconnected. To install:

21. Raise the tank into position into the vehicle and swing the mounting straps under the tank.
22. Install the front fuel tank strap mounting bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
23. Remove the jack.
24. Connect the fuel return pipe to the fuel feed pipe.
25. Attach the rear fuel feed pipe to the inlet side of the fuel filter.
26. Tighten the line fittings to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Make sure to use a back-up wrench to prevent the fuel filter from turning.
27. Connect the vapor hose to the vapor pipe at the front of the vehicle.
28. Attach the fuel filler vent hose to the tank. Connect the fuel filler hose to the fuel filler neck of the tank.
29. Install the exhaust heat shield and the mounting bolts.
30. Position the exhaust system and install the rubber hangers.
31. Carefully lower the vehicle, then refill the fuel system
32. Connect the negative battery cable, then install the fuel filler cap, if not done already.
33. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, then ON and check for fuel leaks.

1. Release the fuel system pressure using the recommended procedure.
2. Remove the fuel pump unit through the access panel in the floor of the trunk. Drain the fuel tank into a portable fuel siphoning container through the opening in the fuel tank where the fuel pump is mounted.

Prior to disconnecting fuel lines, wrap a shop rag around the connections to absorb any fuel spillage due to residual pressure in the lines.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove both rear tires.
3. Remove the exhaust pipe rubber insulators off the mounting studs of the rear of the vehicle and in front of the fuel tank.
4. Using grease pencil or paint marker, place alignment marks on the fuel filler hose, filler tube, vent hose and vent tube.
5. Remove the rear splash shield from the right rear wheel well.
6. Disconnect the fuel filler hose and the vent hose near the fuel filter.

1. Disconnect both ends of the sway bar from the stabilizer links. Use a grease pencil or paint marker to outline the position of the crossmember ends on the frame rail.

1. Remove the crossmember mounting bolts and pull the crossmember down until it stops.

1. Place a transmission jack under the fuel tank to support its weight.

The sway bar bracket bolts must be replaced after loosening or removal. Only use original equipment bolts as replacement.

1. Remove the sway bar mounting bracket, heat shield and fuel tank strap. To prevent the sway bar from falling down, install sway bar mounting bracket with the bolts finger-tight only.

1. Carefully and slowly lower the front of the fuel tank. Slide the tank away from the crossmember while pushing the filler vent and fill tube over the crossmember. Detach any remaining fuel or electrical connections. Lower the fuel tank.

To install:

1. Position the tank on the transmission jack or other suitable lift, with the shield and the tank strap in place. Raise the tank over the crossmember and place it in the proper position. Be sure that the electrical connector, pressure relief/rollover valve hose, fuel supply and return lines are accessible through the opening in the trunk. Check to be sure that nothing is pinched or kinked in any way.
2. Push the vent and the filler tube over the crossmember. Rotate the sway bar into position and install the sway bar brackets.
3. Raise the tank into place and position the sway bar mounting bracket and the tank straps in place. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
4. Raise the crossmember into position and align with the locating marks made during removal. Install bolts and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
5. Reconnect the filler tube and vent tube making sure to align with the marks made during removal.
6. Connect the sway bar ends to the link arms and tighten sway bar mounting nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
7. Install the exhaust onto the hangers. Install the rear splash shield in the right rear wheel well.
8. Install the rear wheels and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts, in a star pattern sequence, to 95-100 ft. lbs. (129-135 Nm).
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Install the fuel pump module.
11. Connect the fuel supply, return and vent tubes. After installation of the quick-connect fittings, check for proper connection by pulling back on the quick-connect fitting. The tube should lock in place. If the connection is not complete, make sure the black plastic ring is not causing the locking retainer to jam in the release position.
12. Install the fuel pump access cover and gasket. Tighten the fasteners and install the trunk liner.
13. Install the filler cap and reconnect the negative battery cable.
14. With the ignition in the ON position, access the DRB III ASD Fuel System Test to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks.

1. Check the rear wheel alignment and adjust, if necessary.
