There is a small battery INSIDE of the camera. It may need to be replaced OR the camera may have a short inside causing it to drain. If you need to have it serviced or if you need the correct battery, try this site: www.CamerasAndParts.com They just deal with the Canon's and they know these Canons well. They can either service it for you OR they should be able to sell you the part. It's the only place we recommend for the Canons. They are excellent and about half the cost on services as most other places.

There is a back up battery that holds the time and date for up to 3 weeks after the main battery is removed, if it was charged prior to the main battery being removed. It take a freshly charged battery about 4 hours to charge the backup battery in the first place. If the back battery no longer holds a charge it needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: camera will not retain time setting

Firts check the state of the litium battery, this is locate near the Audio/video port in your camera, with small flat screw driver you will be able to remove it. If the same situation occur after replacing the litium battery and i'm assuming the unit had never be open before unfortunately your camera needs new main board ass'y. But if the case is that some one open the unit before check for a loose conector from the litium unit to the main board.

SOURCE: everytime I turn the camera on the time and date

There are two batteries in the camera. One is the big one you charge and the other is a little coin type battery. This coin battery maintains your settings and when it goes your camera forgets things. Same setup on computers and a lot of other electronics. In your camera the battery is a CR1220 worth about $1-$2. It should last about 3-5 years but you never know.

The battery is in a little holder on the left hand side of the camera. Its under the same cover as the usb connector and power plug in. You should be able to pop out the battery holder fairly easily. This is one of those things that if you take the camera to a battery store they will probably do it for you if they aren't busy. If you look at page 137 of your manual you will find the instructions for doing it yourself.

SOURCE: Canon A450 internal battery problem?

There are cameras with 'fixed' internal batteries to maintain date/time they are long lived and not usually replaceable.
If this is such a model and it is new then a replacement should be forth coming from the vendor or Canon.
The vendor is the first stop then Canon support

SOURCE: Date/Time Set Won't Work

Write to Canon's customer service. I dropped my camera in water briefly and wrote them. They offered me the chance to replace my camera at an outstanding price or have it repaired. Give them a try!

Every time I turn on camera it ask to set date,

The Time/Date battery is a small round lithium battery the size of a dime in the battery compartment. You can get the numbers off it and buy one at Walmart or Ebay.

I have to set the date everytime I switch it on

On this camera you have a supplemental litte battery that is just beside the AA batteries. If you pull on the little tab that says CR 1220 you will find a battery that looks like a battery watch. Just replace it, go back into your date/time settings and you should be good to go! It worked for me!

The date and time is asked whenever the camera is switched on

Have you set the date and time? If so then your camera's date battery is probably dead and needs to be replaced. First get yourself a CR1220 battery, most often found at your local Radio Shack or online at amazon. Then open the camera's terminal cover (where your USB is) and using your fingernail. Open the battery holder, remove the old battery, and replace with the new one. Reinsert the holder with new battery in your camera and turn on your unit. set the date and time and you should be all set. For further information see your instruction manual or download from Canon at:

The instructions for changing the date battery start on page 137.

Hope this helps!

The camera's clock battery has worn out. Unfortunately, on most Canon SD series, this battery is not user serviceable. Recommend contacting Canon to see if they'll replace it, hopefully at a reasonable cost. 1-800-OK-CANON

Canon 40D - All settings are reset after reboot - Serious error

I would hesitate to disagree with Canon service, but you may want to try replacing the date/time battery. It's a small "button" battery (CR2016) that is supposed to provide power so that the camera 'remembers' the date, time, and other settings when the main battery is removed.

It is located in a holder that slides out of the camera, right next to where the main battery is located. It's worth a try.

Every time I switch it on it asks me to reset the date and time settings. The batteries are fine and I don't recall changing any setting to make it do this.

On the left hand side of the camera there is a little batter hatch, above a screw hole. It has a number written on it. Pull this out and replace the battery in it. This is the time and date battery.

You have to change the 'date battery'. Use the user manual to find its location.

Mine is Canon A520, located beside the cable link sockets. Battery is CR 1220.

If you've replaced the date battery, then the camera is defective. Being only a month old, first recommend seeing if your retailer will exchange it. If not, Canon will fix for free under warranty. Call 1-800-OK-CANON.
