SOURCE: Pale print on PDF files
It sounds like a driver problem. Try replacing the driver for this printer on the printers folder, using the HP LaserJet Series II. With this driver, try again the PDF file and see if it prints correctly.
SOURCE: Slow printing of Acrobat pdf files on HP Laserjet 1300
Hey look, sorry for all the BS you've been given. Its an issue here.
How much ram does your laser jet hold right now?
This would be the choke point on an HP laser jet.
A typical PDF file in high res can be many many megabytes in size and the HP Laser treats these documents as an image file, same in true in Windows, but uses local ram not printer ram like an Apple.
So, if you have a 256K chip, its possible, on your printer and the file is 4-6 MBs in size, you could be looking at a 16-20 minute print job.
I'm not familiar with any tricks to get your printer to use local ram as a cache. If you have Boot Camp, you might consider starting that emulator up and printing from that interface. No real hope for a difference but its worth the try.
Hope that give you some real thoughts to chew over.

Worldvet
SOURCE: hp laserjet p3015 pausing after 5 or so pages
I have seen this problem before. Basically what is happening is the fuser is losing it's heat. When the printer pauses it is waiting for the fuser to get back up to temperature. The first course of action would be to reinstall the print drivers. This will rule out the communication aspect. Then to replace the Fusing assembly (fuser) and if that doesn't work to replace the Power supply.
If it is the power supply it wouldn't be worth the time or money to repair the printer based on the original cost of the machine.

EconoMode
This product has an EconoMode option for
printing drafts of documents. Using EconoMode can use less toner and
decrease the cost per page. However, using EconoMode can also reduce
print quality.
HP does not recommend full-time use of
EconoMode. If EconoMode is used full-time, the toner supply might
outlast the mechanical parts in the print cartridge. If print quality
begins to degrade under these circumstances, you will need to install a
new print cartridge, even if there is toner supply remaining in the
cartridge.
Enable or disable EconoMode in any of these ways:
