Sounds like screen voltage has exceeded much. Its LOT adjustments should be checked. Contact any service technician.

There will be a control panel on the TV, usually on the side of the TV. You can use these buttons to enter the menu and adjust picture brightness. You can find an inexpensive universal remote easily.
You may just have to make a different kind of adjustment.
This is what is called a direct view or crt type TV.
Inside on the main board (see attached photo) is the "flyback" transformer.
Note the two little controls embedded in it----top one is focus--leave it alone.
Lower one is SCREEN and a very slight upwards or right adjustment will bring the overall brightness up.
You want to adjust it just till with brightness on set all the way up you have a normal picture.
Too much and you get excessive brightness and trace lines and or further too much shuts set off.
Some sets have two holes in back of cabinet and small tool can get in and adjust the LOWER or screen control and others the back has to be removed.
Lay set face down on padded surface, remove back screws and set upright---do not touch anything inside with set on when you make the adjustment--control is plastic and a plastic tool a good idea--I have used regular screwdriver but know what not to do.
Let me know if you have questions 98% chance just need the Master Screen bumped up a little bit.
Tries press the tv menu button on the tv front frame bazel to select color, brightness, contract so on...Adjust ur setting.Try website like remotes.com to buy an a exact to the original remote.
This sounds like low screen voltage(A1)try adjusting the a1 voltage bottom control on flyback transformer if you have a voltmeter, voltage on crt base possible market screen or A1 shoud be beteen 350/500 volts when making adjustment remember to take into account current taken by meter If voaltage will not adjust flyback transformer will have to replaced
Brightness settings on any TV made since the early to mid 90's (besides tiny cheap B&W TVs) will have the settings in an on-screen menu. Sometimes the menu is accessible through buttons on the TV itself, but always accessible through the remote control. If your TV does not have the ability to get to the settings menu from the TV controls itself, you will need the original (or compatible) remote control for the set, there is no other option.
It could also be that the set is just dying; it's an older set, and certainly would be a possibility.
If the screen is dark, then the brightness and contrast adjustment must be poor. Use the MENU key (in the TV or the Remote, either) adjust the brightness and contrast as per your viewing convenience. Service manual for this model is not in my knowledge and you should not try to repair or troubleshoot it by yourself without proper knowledge of the circuit workings inside.
With regards to the brigthness issue, you can adjust the brightness control of the your unit through the Screen control located along the flyback of your TV.
