When I try to install the software, I get an error message. The installation just quits.
Answer
An
installation error is defined as any issue or error that prevents the
Setup program from fully completing the task. Installation errors can
manifest themselves in several different ways. One common installation
problem is the Setup program is interrupted with a message indicating
some type of problem. Another type of installation error is when the
Setup program simply disappears or doesn't complete for any reason.
When Setup is interrupted with an errorMany
installation issues will be accompanied with an error code and then an
error message that identifies the problem. Because the camera software
uses the Windows Installer, the exact definition of the problem can be
obtained by looking up the error code on Microsoft's
website. Two common errors are
Error 1904 and
Error 2711.
When Setup simply disappears or doesn't completeNote:
When installing software, administrative rights are needed to install
all the files for camera software. If you are logged in as another user
without administrative rights, the software may not install/function
correctly.
First try booting clean. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Me, or Windows 98, click
here for instructions on booting clean. If you are using Windows 2000, click
here for instructions on booting clean. Once you have booted clean, then try to install the camera software.
Since booting Windows clean may disable CD-ROM support, we recommend you
download the latest camera software for your camera and use the download file to install after you have booted clean.
All other installation issuesIf
you are unable to find a solution to the installation issue given the
above information, please try the following suggestions. After each
suggestion, try running the installation program again.
- Reinstall the Windows Installer. This Windows Installer engine can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=17343
- Windows 2000 Only. Stop the Windows Installer service and reboot the machine. To do this:
- Right-click on My Computer
- Choose Manage
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to Services and Applications
- Click on Services
- On the right side on the pane, double-click on Window Installer
- Choose STOP
- Reboot the computer.
If the service was already stopped, try starting the service, then stopping the service and rebooting.
If following through on the specific instructions above do not resolve the issue, please try the following standard diagnostics:
- Try
a different installation media. For example, if you are attempting to
install the camera software via the CD, download and install the latest
web release. If you are trying to install the web release, try the
camera software CD. Please note, the latest software can be downloaded here.
- Run
ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter. Both of these utilities can be found in
the Accessories program group of the Windows Start Menu.
- Search for and delete all TMP or CHK files.
For Windows 98 and Windows Me Users:
- Click on "Start", "Find" and choose "Files or Folders".
- In the Named field, type *.TMP and click "Find Now"; delete all files found.
- Repeat this procedure with *.CHK.
For Windows 2000 Users:
- Click "Start", "Search" and choose "For files or folders".
- In the Search field, type *.TMP and click "Search Now"; delete all files found.
- Repeat this procedure with *.CHK.
For Windows XP Users:
- Click "Start", "Search".
- In the "All or part of the file name" field, type *.TMP and click "Search;" delete all files found.
- Repeat this procedure with *.CHK.
- Empty
the TEMP directory; this folder may contain files that are interfering
with the installation. To do this, use the following steps:
- Right-click on My Computer and choose Explore.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the C drive.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the Windows directory. (For Windows 2000, it is the WINNT directory.)
- Click
on the plus (+) sign next to the Temp directory. The right side of
Explorer will display the contents. Select all the files listed in the
Temp folder and delete them.
- Reboot the system and try installing the software again.
