Hi Sandra, I'm not 100 % but pretty sure it is the lamp. Does your power light flash at all or say anything on the screen when the screen is black?

Is it 3 sets of 2 buzzes about 15 seconds apart ?
---This is a bad bulb or an improperly installed replacement

or a continuous buzzing ?
----This is a Power Supply Unit going-bad or failed. The louder it gets the harder it is working....eventually it will fail. Ensure there is proper ventilation around your TV.

SOURCE: No picture or sound after replacing lamp

Possible bad color wheel...

Pull the lamp out & look inside where the lamp sends the light-

does the color wheel look defective? If so,replace it.

Or, the lamp ballast may be bad. After that, usually replace

complete engine.

SOURCE: Sony Grand WEGA KDF-60XS955 60 in. Rear Projection popped and turned off

the reason your lamp blew so quickly is the the lamp fan has become cloged with dust. this is a known problem by sony and I have done 15 or so of the up grades needed. first look at the lamp door is it discolored and warped. if so have a tech order the up grade kit which includes a new door, siraco fan, thermal fuse, and lamp. the return fan may also be needed. also some service menu changes need to be made with the fan voltages of fan 1 and fan2.

Set was on and made a loud pop noise and the picture went off. the red light was flashing and no picture. then it made a strange buzzing type of sound a few times. turned off for a couple mins and then...

It sounds like your screen inverter has just gone >bang< unfortunately.
Most screens inside use 2 main circuit boards, and you are most likely going to have to change one of them.
It's possible also for it to have been just the backlight bulb making the loud pop noise too. The inverter may have given out too much power and blown the bulb (a lot like you hear when a house bulb goes bang).

If you can't actually hear any TV sounds (normal sounds like music, voices etc. when they should be there), then it means the problem is more serious, and would need a specialist repair place to check out the electrical circuit inside.

Sony KDF-E42A10 rear projection TV. Won't turn on.

Start by changing the lamp. If you got 5 years out of the old one, count your blessings, most folks only get three. The lamp is designed to be replaced by the consumer. Ebay will carry a replacement for you or you can get it directly from rivervalleyelectronics.net. They've got good prices. The lamp door is on the back. Its really easy, give it a shot.

Take a look at your lamp in your tv. Your owners manual will tell you how to change it.

Sony KDF-E42A10 42

I replaced the bulb recently on my tv and did not push the bulb all the way in. I had the same issue you are having now, and I was able to get it to work when I realized it had not been installed properly. Make sure you push the bulb in all the way then push down on it so it sets in nice and snug. Sounds like someone replaced the bulb and installed it wrong like I did the first time. Good luck.

Sony Bravia LCD T.V.

It is most likely a fan (there are 2 to 3 of them in the set) that is making the noise. I doubt seriously that the lamp is causing a buzzing noise. The only other buzzing sound can come from the ballast wich powers the lamp.
