Samsung HD 1080p 42 inch
Without testing the components this can be a variety of things.
It could be the power inverter board which drives the lcd screen itself.
It could be a bad mainboard which controls the entire tv.
In either instance, the cost of replacement parts are often higher then the total cost of the tv.
Todays electronics are designed to be thrown away (not something I agree with at all)
The last inverter board I replaced cost over $300.00, the only reason the customer paid for the part, was the tv was no longer manufactured in the size they wanted.
If you still wish to repair the tv yourself, you may want to contact samsung support, so you can at least work out which part exactly is damaged, you will need a Philips head screw driver, Digital Multi-meter, and a general understanding of electricity. Also make sure you have ample room to take apart the tv and place each component in a safe location so to reduce further damage.

It sounds like an Intergrated Circuit (IC) has fried. Even on a good day, this is not something you can attack at home. As a tech (and as an owner of that model samsung), I'd need a map & tools to know what's going on. Your best bet in this situation is to contact Samsung and let them recommend an authorized service center in your area. Sorry I can't be of more help, but this is a rather serious problem.

Hi, Depeending on the thickness of the lines matters. If the lines are Black and about 1-2 inches thick it may be a bad bottom buffer board or a bad panel (screen).
If the lines are thin 1/16 to 1/8 inch it is most likely a bad panel.
You can open up the set and depending on the model, see the thin board/boards running across the bottom with ribbon cables going to the panel. You may be able to attempt reseating the ribbon cables, but be careful as some retainer plugs break very easy.
If the lines are thick black and the reseating doesn't correct it you may be able to buy the coresponding buffer. Unfortunately some bottom buffers are actually part of the panel. If you are not comfortable taking it apart then call a professional but be aware labor charges start around $200 not counting parts, panels start at $600 up to over $1000
hope this helps
Thanks
Eric

Perform the following tasks:
Determine if the "line" is an external cause or internal.
By external, it means a result of the interface, cabling or other boxes that are connected to the set.By internal, it means a defect within the hardware or software of the set itself.
Do find out you must disconnect everything but, say one video source.
The best would be to unplug, pull everything from the back or front of
the tv .By a process of elimination you should be able to convince yourself the
source of the vertical line is external to the tv or internal to it.
Then, once you have decided that, you can attack the place that is most
likely to be the source. For example, some of the early sets had some
non-standard processors and had to be upgraged to the new standard
after they were purchased by the consumer. It had to do with the HD
and HDMI interface connections, but could have effected other stuff.
Also, some S video inputs have glitches in them.

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
If the line is present on all inputs, and effects the TV menu you most likely need a new screen.
You can try changing buffers, reseating cables.
