So this morning I stop to fill up with fuel and I can't put the nozzle in the tank! ... station where their fuel nozzle didn't "fit" the capless thing so the door didn't open. ... You need the Ford funnel. ... Like they're saying, if the pump end isn't big enough it won't hit the latch. ... You'll get the nozzle stuck in the filler.

if you activate the button and you can hear the release working it will be the flap spring at the flap hinge
they are a simple V shaped spring and they break and fall out
without it the door flap is not moved and the actuator just reengages the flap

To replace it you need to drain the fuel or drive the car until your vehicle is almost out of fuel (reserve light on )check if there is easy access to your rubber hose that goes from fuel door to your gas thank. If you can see the clamp on the hose close to the fuel thank you need to open fuel filler door, remove fuel filler cap there will be 3 or 4 screws 1/4"" size. Remove it, remove clamp from hose and air hose clamp (smaller one going to gas thank) and remove whole assembly. Installation is in reverse order of removal. Best way is to drive your car up the ramps, set the parking brake, choke the wheels and do the repair. It will probably take 1 to 2 hours of your time...

There is a fuel filler door release switch on the driver's side door in the map pocket. The fuel filler door will pop open when the switch is pressed. It is closed manually.

If this system is malfunctioning, a manual release is located in the trunk. Remove the access cover which is located on the left-side inner trim panel and pull the release cable. The fuel filler door will pop open.

I'm having this problem with my 2003 nissan maxima. I keep the driver side door open and keep my hand at the edge where the fuel door hinge is, and reache the button with a screwdriver or pen, and as it press the button, I push on the fuel door panel and it comes out. I'm going to replace the fuel door sooner or later. It all looks kinda dumb at the gas station.

1)Open the gas door and unbolt the gas filler neck from the body of the vehicle, using a 1/4-inch ratchet and socket.-------
2)Crawl underneath the vehicle, and use a flat-head screwdriver to disconnect the fuel filler neck from the gas tank. There is a hose clamp that secures the rubber hose to the tank, and a breather tube as well. Work the tubing off the tank using your hands.--------
3)Pull the gas filler neck out of the gas door by hand. You may need to twist it around to snake the tubing through the body of the car, but it will come out.------

You must drain all the diesel fuel out of the tank and purge the fuel lines as well or it will not start.

I have a 97 and there is no release for it. Just push on the right end of the gas cap door to open it. Hope that helps.
